Sadly they have now closed down, but if they ever reopen it’s excellent. (Aug 2023).

The food was great. The portions were huge. Husband ordered chicken and was served sides they were enough for a table of 4! Owner is an acquired taste, borderline rude, but done people seem to like him. Will probably go again when we are back in Dumfries if we catch it open (open Thur/Fri/Sat)!

I’m not quite sure where to start with this as I’ve never experienced such poor service in a restaurant before but I’ll try. So we were a party of 10 celebrating my mother in law’s 60th. My partner isn’t from Dumfries and Galloway so just told me he’d looked this place up and decided to book it. I hadn’t really heard of it and had initially wanted to go to the Bank but after looking at reviews of Truffles and seeing people speak highly of the food I thought let’s give it a try. I noticed many speaking about how awful the owner was but I thought surely he can’t be that bad if people are still going and people are still leaving good reviews. How wrong I was! Another warning sign I should have noticed was that we initially booked in for the Friday but changed to the Saturday and they were able to accommodate that easily last minute so clearly aren’t busy. We were running 15mins late. I called to let them know and apologise. The waitress who answered the phone was accepting of this and said it was ok. On arriving the owner ‘greeted’ us. I again apologised and he shrugged his shoulders but let us in. We all sat down and he immediately came to ask us if we wanted drinks. We were looking at the drinks menu and discussing what we wanted when he repeated in a slow and aggressive tone DO.YOU.WANT.ANY.DRINKS??! It was extremely awkward. My dad asked about red wine and he used his notepad to lean over my dad and aggressively hit the menu and point to a wine on the list. We ordered drinks which included 2 pints of beer. As he walked away we all felt very uncomfortable and decided we did not want to spend our money in such a venue when the atmosphere was cold and aggressive. We all decided to leave. My partner spoke to the owner letting him know his front of house manner was appalling and that we’d be leaving. He said he didn’t “understand people” and that he expected us to pay for the pints that had been poured. I gave him a £20 note and he aggressively gave it back to me, stating he had no money in the till to give me change and swiftly snatched the pints back and put them behind the bar. We then left and were politely accommodated in the Bank next door (which I would highly recommend). As we left, the waitress apologised on our way out. I actually felt bad leaving her in such a cold and horrible environment. That owner should not be front of house. He is rude. He is right, he doesn’t understand people and has no people skills whatsoever. I would avoid this place like the plague and go next door to the Bank! (The one star is for the waitress who we had to leave behind)

What a find! Excellent, all home made food, served with a smile! Is there a better steak in town? Pasta to die for! AND now they do a ‘happy hour’ meal deal from 5.30pm. Great stuff from John, Joyce, Chelsea and David’s kitchen team! Don’t miss it!

Came for dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was faultless, delicious, fresh and authentic, the restaurant itself is beautiful and unique. The only thing that let our experience down was the lack of warmth in the servers, and the owner himself seemed a tad hostile and fed up. Would definitely go back, although it would be nice to be made to feel a bit more welcome next time!

It was our first visit to Truffles with friends and we were not disappointed by either the food or the venue. The restaurant had an exclusive vibe to it-cosy and welcoming. Our host was attentive and charming. The food was amazing. What more could you ask for! We are definitely looking forward to our next visit. Thank you for a wonderful evening.??

Dreadfully rude boss and also duped us on bill ? My young 20 year old daughter ordered Capri salad for her starter .. waitress brought a bowl of leaves and asked who had orders ‘mixed salad’. My daughter explained it was the wrong salad and the polite waitress took it away and said she would change it. Then … boss John appears and aggressively challenged my daughter saying he always checks an order and did she not hear him??? She calmly told him she had pointed to the menu but he continued by telling her that the salad she ordered took a long time to prepare. She asked to have no starter to save us all waiting. He stomped off with no words. We ordered steaks for main and were told were served with potato dish and veg. Got asked if wanted chips as a side. We asked if could have chips instead of potato dish. Rudely told ‘no it’s potato dish, but you can order them as a side’. Lovely steaks came - with a side of mash??? Really?? Asked for bill - 10 glasses of wine. We had 5. Two extra charges we had no clue about. Asked him to explain - ‘our glasses are 175ml small and you had 5 large glasses so we do two 175 in the same glass’ Total rip off and we were scammed on the wine. He even told us the glasses are filled to the top??? What wine glass of 250ml has enough space for an extra 100ml?? We paid full bill however and told him his manner had been awful to my daughter. Worked out we were £15 scammed in drinks when we got home. Not interested he was and this was appalling behaviour towards any of his customers, never mind a young 20 year old. Furious and will never be back.

Can not fault the food, it was really good. However the manager in the place creates an awkward atmosphere, with the staff doing their best to work around what must be a difficult culture. The menus have a wine list on the back, but we were haughtily told not to use that one. We were also told of the tapas on the menu “we don’t do that anymore”.

Good food , grumpy waiter who struggled to bend down and pick something up he dropped. Poor service , the mains were served before the starters had been cleared from our table
