Quite simply exceptional. Joe and Sarah are excellent hosts and the food is to die for, among the best we have ever tasted . Eating here is a real experience not just a meal. Thanks for a great weekend Ian and Jill

Our host, Joe, described his place as “a restaurant with rooms.” Meaning, come for the food and wine – and then crash upstairs, which is exactly what we did. Joe’s place won hands-down for the friendliest host and best restaurant. I accidentally left my camera tripod behind and was not able to go back for it. Joe mailed it to our final hotel so it was there waiting for me before we boarded our flight back home. Just the most thoughtful and kind person.

As part of our tour booked with Mackinley Kidd, we have been very pleased with all of our food \\u0026 lodging so far, but The Cross has been a favourite for me. The food has been fantastic, and the rooms are comfy, clean and with all the modern comforts. Joe and his staff are super friendly and helpful, and his Chef Daniel is excellent! They have won many awards, and it is easy to see why. A pleasant surprise and treasure in the little town of Kingussie! Best of luck to them in the future.

Nestling next to a burbling river, this is a surprisingly small hotel which delivers a great surprise. The chef, David, has achieved 3 rosettes for outstanding food, while Joe, the owner, delivers rare wines that are the perfect accompaniment, with a story about each one. I thoroughly recommend the tasting menu and wine flight. It was our first visit, but other guests had driven many hours for a repeat experience. The bedrooms are spacious, tasteful and comfortable. The surrounding countryside great for walks and meeting the highland wildlife. We discovered that Kingussie also has an excellent distillery, the Spey. Sophisticated and delicious. The 2nd distillery on the Spey, Dalwhinnie being the first and highest. The distillery is not open to the public, so taste it at The Cross.

If you are looking for calm, you’ll find it at The Cross. Set off the main road in Kingussie, the restaurant with rooms occupies what was once a tweed mill. The rooms are very comfortable. Some face the river side, and some the woodlands. The second floor, where the rooms are located, has a lovely and quite spacious sitting room. The Cross is a very peaceful setting. We thought we’d had great meals, but dinner at The Cross is a cut above. A limited a la carte menu but there is something for everyone. They also serve a tasting menu with optional wine pairings. Pretty good wine list, and your host, Joe, will help you make the right choice. The dishes are expertly prepared and beautifully plated. And through it all, Joe and his staff strive to help their guests relax and unwind.

Lovely quiet place with outstanding food and wine. Joe and son Pierre looked after us very well. We had the Squirrel room and were treated to an acrobatic display by two red squirrels worthy of Mission impossible. We stayed for two nights. The room was very spacious and the beds comfortable. Whatever you do don’t miss eating here and take Joe’s recommendation for wine.

What a fabulous meal accompanied by amazing wine - why has this place not got a Michelin star !! You must visit this wonderful restaurant!! The chef David Skiggs is a genius and his attention to detail is off the charts

My husband and I were very happy during our 3 night stay at the Cross. Joe and Sarah were welcoming hosts with a clear passion and knowledge for their craft. Immensely charming atmosphere with very comfortable rooms. Our dining experiences were second to none and have left us with wonderful memories of food, friends, and fun we will always cherish. We'll make a special point of revisiting the Cross during our next trip to Scotland.

OUR ELOPEMENT DINNER AND STAY\\n\\nAfter deciding that we were going to get married at Loch Morlich in the beautiful Cairngorms, the hunt was on for somewhere to stay, and somewhere to host a dinner. We definitely hit the jackpot with The Cross!\\n\\nWe stumbled across The Cross via an internet search, when searching for the best restaurants in the area. We were excited by the look of the food, but also because they had rooms - the potential to kill two birds with one stone! After reaching out to Joe and Sarah we were able to hire the whole venue for two nights, with breakfast and dinner included (the second night being our elopement dinner).\\n\\nAs they have the ability to cater for 20 covers across a typical sitting (by my understanding), and we had 19, it was going to be quite a push to get the food out at the same time (We didn't need to worry - it went very smoothly). To help, for our elopement dinner evening, Joe suggested that we agree a set menu, and get everyone's choices in advance. This worked perfectly. Joe provided a menu with three dishes for each of the courses, which could cater for a variety of dietary requirements. We then responded with a spreadsheet with guest names, room requirements, and food/drink choices. Joe was even able to source some really good non-alcoholic prosecco so that everyone was catered for.\\n\\nWe visited the venue a few days before our stay, just to meet Joe and Sarah, and scope out the space available. We were able to discuss the table arrangements and finalise a few things.\\n\\nUpon our arrival, everyone was shown to their various rooms. These rooms are lovely! They are clean, comfortable, and don't feel clinical like a hotel, but more like a really nice family home. Joe and Sarah were such wonderful hosts, and everyone enjoyed the breakfasts and dinners. The service was relaxed and friendly, rather than the overly stuffy that you can get at some high-end restaurants. The food itself, is really very good indeed. It treads the boundary of being homely and familiar, yet sophisticated and memorable so very well. The locally sourced ingredients are top notch!\\n\\nFor our special dinner, the team even moved a grand piano to make the space work better for our seating arrangement. No mean feat - we are very grateful for the efforts!\\n\\nAs a value proposition, for our mini elopement-style wedding, with dinner and accommodation for our families, we were very impressed. We don't feel we were over charged, as some venues try when they hear the word wedding. The price was very transparent and fair. We even left a good tip, because we thought it was such good value!\\n\\nThank you Joe, Sarah, and staff at The Cross for making our wedding day memorable and relaxing! We will definitely visit again when we pass through the area.

We had an amazing dinner experience. We were welcomed in and treated like the most important guests. The food was delicious and just the right portion size. The atmosphere was wonderful. We can’t recommend The Cross enough. Thank you.

We stayed 2 nights and ate in the restaurant both nights. We had a wonderful room with a lovely balcony overlooking the stream. We had the tasting menu the first night and all the dishes were fabulous. The wine pairing was exceptional and made us aware of some unusual and wonderful wines. The second night we selected from the 3 course menu and again the dishes were wonderful. Food, wine, and service were all perfect.

Joe really cares about good food so the menu reflects what is available and of good quality. He clearly has some excellent sources. All food is very well cooked and plated which means meals are a leisurely affair as each dish is given the attention it deserves.\\nWe knew the area well so knew where to go for good walks but apart from local Kingussie walks perhaps some more guidance on walks a little further afield would be a good ideas - such as Glen Feshie (Achlean side much better), Loch an Eilein and Uath Lochans\\nNo haggis for breakfast but appreciate there is not the demand to justify including as part of a full Scottish breakfast\\nInternet very good with Wifi at 35 mbs, good beds and bedroom

Restaurant Only\\nIt was AMAZEBALLS!\\nSpecial occasion, my birthday, my bf contacted Joe and set it all up.\\nThe food was exquisite.\\n1. A complimentary amuse buche with a pre dinner cocktail, and chatting with guests, in the foyer gave a very homey feel and set the feeling for the evening.\\n2. The breads with dinner were a nice selection that were wonderfully fresh, however the blue cheese and apple muffin was an evening standout. The crispy outside highlighted the softness of the inside. And while the flavors mentioned may seem strong here they were delicate and complimentary.\\n3. The plating of the beets amongst delicate pearls of creamy goodness and pansy petals looked like a fairy meal.\\n4. The pork belly just melts in the mouth in the best way.\\n5. The gnocchi stole the show from the halibut. It was creamy with out being squishy and the pan fry really made it cohesive.\\n6. The local lamb was succulent and the tortellini was so good I was wishing for more.\\n7. For the desserts I was so pleased with Joe's wine pairing recommendations. It made all the difference for enjoying the cheese and souffle. I'm really looking forward to having my wine store back home order what we enjoyed.\\nJoe and Sarah were just so hospitable and personable. We spent quite a bit of time chatting. I can wait to visit Scotland again and stay at their place!
