We were on a group tour and took the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig. We did not know we would be having lunch in Mallaig, but had a little over an hour there to find something. The main road restaurants were very busy, so we headed up the hill and found The Chlachain Inn. We looked at their menu and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! The ambiance, food, and service were all excellent! We would definitely go back if we end up in Mallaig again and highly recommend them!

We went to dinner. We entered without much expectation, but the kitchen pleasantly surprised us. It was our favorite restaurant on our route through Scotland. The venison and beef stuffed haggies were delicious. It is also evident that the people of the town go to that bar, and we were even able to participate in a contest among the customers. Highly recommended.

Food and drinks: Delicious traditional food.

We ate lunch at the Chlachain Inn on a tour stopover. There was a wide range of options on the menu, lots of fish and seafood (naturally). My wife chose the seafood chowder and fish & chips; I had fish & chips (gluten free) with an extra piece of fish because... well... I don't get decent fish & chips often.

The seafood chowder arrived and our collective jaws dropped. The bowl was full of mussels, prawns, scallops and other tasty morsels - there was some chowder broth in there, but definitely the seafood was the star of the show. My wife raved at the taste and quality of the chowder.

The fish and chips were also fantastically good - quite possibly the best I remember having. The haddock was fresh, the batter light and not greasy - it was served on a bed of mushy peas.

Now, I am generally not a fan of mushy peas- the name calls to mind a childhood spent trying to choke down overcooked canned peas under my father's baleful glare.

These mushy peas were pureed fresh, with mint. Divine. I mean - not 'okay, I can manage to eat these without gagging', but 'OMG I need to make these myself at home!'

So... The whole meal was a fantastic success that left both my wife and I thinking on how we will expand our repertoire at home... Which for us is the highest compliment we can give.

It poured with rain but inside was warm and friendly. Food very good. Children ate mussels and Mac cheese. We had fresh fish. Breakfast generous helpings of whatever was requested.

Rooms: Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Ours had a balcony. Only downside was having to use an outside stair to get to the rooms above the pub- restaurant in the rain.

Nearby activities: Great beaches at Morar. Lovely walking in hills. Boat trips to small Isles. Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna.

Walkability: We walked down hill to the ferry.

Food and drinks: Great food, great atmosphere. We were fourteen in our group and the restaurant and bar were heaving but food and drinks arrived promptly and tasted delicious.

The Clachain Inn was recommended by our B&B host. The young bloke serving us was great after getting used to our Aussie accents. The food was absolutely brilliant and probably one of the best pubs meals we’ve had on our trip.

Food and drinks: We had the pork and the tagliatelle, both were excellent. The tagliatelle had a good mix of seasonal veg in it and the apple slaw worked well with the pork.

The side of chips was a good size and well seasoned.

Neither of us could finish our meals though, just too much for us both.

Had a lovely meal at The Chlachain Inn! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for a casual night out. The food was delicious, especially the vegetarian burger and tagliatelle pasta, definitely made the drive all the way from Strontian worth it haha!
They also have a great selection of drinks. Would definitely recommend!
