Just popped in for a light late lunch. The place was not busy but had a nice ambience. My friend ordered a steak sandwich which came with a large side salad. He assured me it was nice & he had enjoyed it. I went for a lighter option - crumpet with wild mushrooms & garlic butter which was cooked well but not overly done, nicely presented & very tasty & we shared a side of chips.... just as well, it was a large portion for a side & the chips were beautifully cooked (triple fried) thick, chunky, crisp on the outside & soft & fluffy on the inside - & they arrived hot. My friend had two cappuccinos & I had two hot chocolates (we had a drink on arrival & another after our meals).Again they were nice drinks & finished our meal well. The facilities, though not ultra-modern and only small, were nicely appointed. They were spotlessly clean with a motion operated tap, liquid soap & hand lotion, and a choice of paper towels or a hot air hand dryer. The staff were friendly and helpful, not overly-attentive thankfully, but professional & available at the right times. All in all we enjoyed our lunch break at The Black Bear. Thanks guys.

CASK ALES and devine food here.Highly educated chef with a creative style and rotating food menu.1st day I ate the Curried mussles on toast. I could've eaten two servings as my main course.2nd day I had the flat iron steak with peppercorn sauce. The steak tender and juicy grilled to perfection. I'm throwing this prediction out there, "Chef's Peppercorn sauce is what Whitchurch will become famous for". A creamy mushroom base with light peppery finish. Devine! The grilled cabbage was a great compliment.I would highly recommend having this on your agenda. The Staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the food, drinks, and local attractions. Truly an inviting cozy hometown atmosphere.

What a beautiful pub! A lot of thought and care given to the interior decor and bar, and spotlessly clean. A taster of wine given to make sure I liked it before buying a glass. Delicious food with similar attention to detail. Really fresh fish, light crisp batter, homemade tartar sauce and interesting vinegar to accompany it. We were unable to get a table in the restaurant we had planned, so chose this pub instead at the last minute. Delighted we did and will definitely return. Thank you!

We dropped in here having been refused elsewhere when looking for Saturday lunch. So glad we did. The staff were helpful attentive but not overbearing and knowledgeable, we were allowed to try the draught wine before we bought and there were beer samples on bar to help make decisions. The bar looked fully stocked with a wide variety of brands. The decor was appropriate for the pub style and everything was clean and tables not chemically sticky like in some establishments. Even the bathrooms were very clean and good decor. As to the food interestingly different compared to normal pubs. Well presented light and flavoursome. In fact just all round great afternoon

My husband, grandson and I where travelling back from Ruthin and needed lunch. We decided on the lack Bear as it wasn’t too much of a detour. We were so glad we did. What a lovely place. Very clean and superior in every way even down to the plush napkins. My grandson and I ordered the small fish and chips with a side order of onion rings and we weren’t disappointed. The fish was the best batter I have ever had with a slaw to die for. It was beautiful. I’d like to thank all the staff and especially Mark in the kitchen for having such high standards.

Met up with friends, as this was half-way between our homes. Our first visit and weren't disappointed. First of all, the choice of great quality Real Ales was excellent and tasted great. The Food Menu choice was fantastic with something for everyone. Between us we had the crispy Goats' Cheese salad, Tandoori Chicken and the Pie. All were excellent. Finally, the Staff, AMAZING - friendly, helpful and great service. Will definitely plan to meet our friends in Whitchurch again and certainly eat here again.

Cannot fault it, will definitely return. Had a Sunday lunch which was wonderful and cooked to perfection. Luckily I had my "expansion" trousers on because by the end of the meal, I was as full as an egg! She drove me home which was lovely because I was able to have a contented snooze in the passenger seat with my head resting against the window, jaw agape and drooling. A lovely sight for the pedestrians of whitchurch to observe!!

Eadie served us today absolutely amazing service! I had the flat iron steak medium rare, perfect! My wife is vegetarian she had a braised onion with tenderstem broccoli and wild mushrooms. Just so happy with the warmth of this place along with the great food. Defo coming back.

Quick stop off in this gem of a pub on our way down to Wales. So glad we picked here - we had 4 sharing plates (great vegetarian choices) and found the quality was brilliant and lovely flavours. You can tell they put effort into their food menu. Staff were friendly and there was a nice, traditional pub atmosphere. Gorgeous beer garden out back as well with lots of plants ?Vegetarian options: Interesting dishes rather than just the usual boring options other places usually have!

We were looking for Sunday lunch, and spotted the menu outside which was dated for the day we were there, and offered just what we wanted. As we were quite early we got a table, it certainly filled up later with reservations. Ordered at the bar, and was advised that smaller portions were available ( couldn’t see this on the menu), which was ideal for me. All of the food was beautifully cooked and presented, the service was quick and friendly. Definitely recommend.

Lovely historic venue for lunch and a catch up with a friend. Food, service, atmosphere, etc., very good. Was a little pricey compared to where I live but probably on par for the area.

Called on the off-chance on a Monday whilst shopping. Fairly busy with people eating but was found a table promptly. Both chose the chicken served with side salad and opted for new potatoes instead of fries. An Americano coffee and half a Diet Coke. All very tasty and was nicely presented. Only downside was we were given the wrong bill when paying, which was for £44. We were paying half each on our cards and my friend had already paid £22 when we noticed it wasn’t our bill. Ours was £42 so I just paid £20 although on reflection we think we were still overcharged as the main meals were only £16/£17 each which makes the drinks quite expensive. Besides that, we would still return and recommend
