Nightmare when trying to book a room and trying to enter the property. I wanted to ask a question prior to booking online. All phone numbers are answer machine only. They offer a call back but this is rubbish because no one calls you back. I had an early start at Bristol airport so I gambled and booked one night. Upon arrival, the place was dark and looked very shut up for the winter. No one there to meet you. Tried to use the keycode given to me in an automated email, but it didn't work. Tried upward of ten times. Repeatedly called the phone number on the door but was repeatedly directed to answer machines. So stuck outside in the cold and dark. Eventually someone replied on my phone. Attempted again to use the door entry code but it failed to work. However after a few more goes the door suddenly opened. Voila!Later I met another couple stuck outside trying to get in. It was only the fact I was going out that I was able to let them in.The hotel is however right in the village square. The Butcombe Brewery Lamb Inn in the same square is the place to go for a beer and food.

Great location on Axebridge square, with a decent sized, comfortable and quiet room for a family. The staff were all really nice and super helpful. Superb breakfast! We look forward to visiting again next year.

Loved it. Perfect location. Lovely comfortable room. Tea and coffee with fridge and coffee maker. Lovely vegan and vegetarian breakfast. Bar is very nice with nice decor. The shower was lovely and hot. My room was in a perfect spot to watch over the square. The were also kind enough to let me put my bike just inside the building overnight but there are bike spaces just outside on the square. Lovely helpful staff.

We have recently stayed at The Oak House Hotel and were left feeling a little disappointed. The hotel is in a lovely setting and we booked via booking.com where it was advertised as 5 star and a 5 minute drive to Cheddar Gorge however we personally would not agree with this rating and it is more of a 30 minute drive to Cheddar Gorge. On arrival we were greeted by a very friendly man who gave us our key and made a big fuss of a Labrador. He explained where our room was and was very eager to tell us that it came with a roll top bath in the room. The room was a very generous size which was ideal with us travelling with a 4 month baby as we had a lot of things with us and needed the space! There was indeed a roll top bath however when we went to use it to bath the baby it was very clear that it hadn't been cleaned since it was last used - there was a LOT of bodily hair left in the bottom and a scum mark right around the bath. The rest of the room was also far from 5 star clean. We had phoned up to book a table in the restaurant when we booked the room and were not informed that they would not be serving a whole menu, just cheese boards and we only found this out at our alloted table time - 6pm. Whilst I'm sure the cheese boards would be very tasty and of a generous size after a 5 hour drive we were wanting a proper meal which left us trying to find a dog friendly table on a Sunday night very last minute. Breakfast was very tasty and the perfect portion size however we were left with coffee with no milk and by the time we were able to source some our coffees were already cold. I will say though that the bed we slept in was very comfy and we were provided with a fan which given the very hot weather of recent we were very grateful for. It was far from a terrible stay however it was definitely not as advertised.

Great quirky Hotel and pub, we had travelled 5 hours and arrived quite late in the day, kitchen was closed but Alex the barman madr sure we didn't go hungry and fixed us a platter of cheeses and meats to share, very tasty. Staff were friendly and accommodating, room was spacious and cosy, not the most modern but had everything we needed for some tired travellers to rest. Location is perfect. Carpet on the way to the rooms could do with a scrub but doesn't detract for the overall experience. Breakfast was tasty and hot, hearty and tea and coffee in plentiful supply. Thank you oak house team. Especially Alex for being so wonderful to us. :)

After a 7 hour nightmare of a journey from north wales I was looking forward to a lovely shower and good meal at Oak House. What a disappointment. No warm welcome , no help with luggage through a maze of up and down steps. The place is shabby , with dirty carpets. Our room was on the front facing the square. The rug was stained . The wall was water stained .The en-suite had a broken lock as if someone has forced entry. The door looked like it was retrieved from a skip!Nice modern shower spoilt by black mould and dirt. Tiny sink on a piece of shabby chic furniture totally did not work , black mould , peeling paint . No towel rail , nowhere to put or dry towels , or hang clothes. Toilet handle stuck when flushed. Mirrors were fogged and unusable for applying makeup. The worse thing was they asked us by email to book a table for a meal which we did as the food on website looked lovely. WRONG! No hot food ! We were offered a cold platter for two and my kind husband agreed to share the vegetarian one. After being confronted by a 1 lb of cheese , a handful of rocket, 12 grapes , stick of celery, some olives , hummus, 6 sundries tomatoes , slice of bread and oil for £35 we went to bed early. I calculated the ingredients could have been obtained from Aldi for less than a tenner. Fortunately the bed was comfortable. Shame there were no blackout curtains so we were awake at 4 am! Breakfast in the dirty bar served by a frosty member of staff was again disappointing Scrambled egg on sourdough with smoked salmon sounded good and was ordered but arrived with brown toast! We couldn’t wait to check out.

We only stopped here for a quick coffee so cannot comment on the rooms, but the pub looked clean and the coffee was good. The bar staff were welcoming and polite, and the toilets were very clean. The pub/hotel is right in heart of Axbridge and worth a visit.
