The whole hotel needs to shut down and be refurbished and updated! Staff to be fair does try to accommodate and were helpful in allocating another suitable rooms for us etc. However, service is extremely slow and rooms are falling apart. In the Garden Lodge we stayed, my partner had to “fix” a broken toilet window (the locks broken) using a blind. Sofas in the rooms are so old, you cannot possibly sit on them as you sink right into it. Not good for bad back! Over all, we cannot recommend this hotel. Shame it has a great potential, we felt sorry for lovely people working there.

Heard lovely things about Charlton house hotel so booked a spa break for my 30th birthday treat. Reception staff were lovely and helpful. Arrived and had a massage booked for 3pm so had that done and was really pleased it was a lovely experience, spa staff were lovely! Wanted to use the other facilities but decided to check into our room first. Got shown up to our room which was the top floor in the roof which as it was a hot day this was boiling and the reception staff member suggested we open a window to cool it down. It’s an older building so single window didn’t open very wide but found a tall fan in the room, put this on but it didn’t really do anything. The room was generally very tired looking with rips in the curtain, tie back hook falling out of the wall, woodworm in the window sill to name a few. As stated on their site ‘romantic break’ this was not romantic in any way. The bed was comfy which we were pleased about. Walking back down the the spa the banister was very wobbly on part of the stairs which didn’t seem safe at all. Back into the spa we enjoyed the sauna, steam room, pool inside and outside bit and the hot tub. Again I can’t complain about the spa it was the best part of the break. We had dinner reservations in the evening which was part of the package we booked so chose a table and looked at the menu. I had a burger and I can’t fault it, it was delicious, my husband had the beef brisket which he said was tasteless and dry and much preferred the look of my burger. In the restaurant we sat next to a window with the window sill all around the edge. This was all covered in woodworm and dead flies…… definitely not nice to count dead flies while your waiting for your food. They have white sheet sun shades hanging from the ceiling and again the amount of dead flies this was pretty disgusting. Pudding was nice although if it wasn’t part of our package we wouldn’t have had it as it was very expensive for what it was. Decided to sit in the garden after food for a couple games of cards with our drinks and the fire alarm goes off, walked out the front to the drive with the other guests and luckily a false alarm, the reception lady was very apologetic for this but we understood the precautions they have to take. Took a stroll around the garden after which was nice, tennis court hidden behind the apple trees. Time for bed so went back into the hot room and tried to put the fan in front if the window to draw more cool air into the room, which helped a little. In the morning we had the breakfast full English for both of us. I asked for the scrambled egg with mine well when it came out it looked like someone had vomited on my plate. The sausage wasn’t very nice neither was the black pudding. Again sat by the window with dead flies all around on the window sill and again on the sun shades. You could help yourself to cereal, yogurt and juice which was nice. Although didn’t appreciate the conversations you could hear the staff having pretty loudly together about the energy drinks she wakes up in the night to have and the other staff member laughing at the fact she made someone cry on their last day of working there didn’t seem very much like team spirit. Breakfast was over and holding onto the arms of my chair to push it back to get up one of the arms lifted up so was broken. Went to reception to check out and mentioned the broken chair to her and she asked where it was and went straight into the restaurant to get it. Went back into the spa to make the most of it before having to leave again having a nice time, noticed a few things that needed attention such as in the pool before going outside there is some jet seats, on the floor one of the protectors had come off and I’m sure this could cause injury so I put it back on myself. Again on the side lots of dead flies on the sides of the pool. All in all was very disappointed in this spa break and wouldn’t recommend staying here. Very overpriced for a pretty rubbish break! Spa treatments however I would recommend.

We stayed for one night in a superior double room. We have visited this hotel a few times before and enjoyed the spa/restaurant. This time, it was different. We still enjoyed our stay but a lot of things were just very average. The biggest disappointment was the restaurant. The prices they charge are very high (which we were aware of from previous visits). Examples are £12 for starter, £35 for steak, £12 for a dessert. All prices also have 12.5% service to add on top. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either. My wife asked for her steak medium rare and it was cooked well done which is a very basic mistake. It was very quiet in the restaurant which is no surprise. The only people eating would be hotel guests who are there for convenience. On a more positive note, the grounds are nice, and we had the weather to enjoy them. We visited during a heatwave (29C). Which is why we were surprised to find that the radiator was on in our room. It was the middle of the day and 29C, energy crisis, what energy crisis. The radiator was turned off but the thermostat must not work - Room 18 for any staff reading reviews. This room did have a hot tub which was a surprise. It wasn't at the temperature you would expect but actually that was ok considering the weather. One thing to be aware of, there is a £15 pp fee for the Spa if booking through an external like Expedia. It is hidden in the information but did catch me out. The Spa was ok, pretty much as we remembered. Most things were working (unlike another review has said earlier in the year). We didn't have any treatments so can't comment on that. My summary would be that this hotel has gone downhill. Prices have gone up if anything and quality has gone down. We both agreed that we would not likely be returning here and would seek out a different spa hotel for our next trip.

We came for an overnight stay The evening menu was limited we waited a while to get a drink in the evening when we returned and the service we had for our breakfast in the morning was disappointing with a 45min wait and others receiving there breakfast before us after arriving after us

Charlton House was the venue for me and my husband's first trip away together after our wedding, and they didn't disappoint. We had only booked a double room using a Virgin experience voucher; but we were upgraded to the garden lodge with a congratulatory gift when we arrived, which was so unexpected and lovely. I especially enjoyed the standing bathtub. We had a relaxed weekend enjoying the hydrotherapy pools, full body massages, and the food in the restaurant was great quality (we had the beef brisket). The staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend for a weekend getaway.

Excellent room with private terrace. Well equipped Gym and spa too plus excellent breakfast. We ate at a nearby pub in the evening (poachers pocket) rather than the hotel restaurant so cannot comment on that. But can definitely recommend the food at the poachers pocket.

We have never been to Charlton House before but I am glad we tried it. The Hotel is lovely set in pretty gardens with an outside sitting area for lunch or just a glass of wine, tea or coffee. The staff are friendly and polite. The food is very good. We stayed 2 nights and the menu was the same both nights, not sure how often they change the menu. The rooms are quirky, we had one with a mezzanine floor which was different. Only one thing wrong was lack of a wardrobe and drawers for clothes. There was a small hanging area with a curtain across. If your stay was longer than 2 nights this could be an issue. The spa area is good with a decent gym and a small pool.

Our groupon deal included evening meal , 1 night stay with breakfast, also included a spa treatment . I could not fault this hotel, everything was amazing, my friend and I felt so relaxed , and would love to go again. Our room was massive with a big bath where you had a champagne bowl to put your bottle, also twin showers and twin sinks , we felt so spoiled and left the hotel feeling relaxed and mellowed.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights with a massage booked each. Before we arrived the treatment was booked incorrectly 2 times and we were given 3 different time slots. Having confirmed the treatment time this was then changed only a few hours before the treatments were booked for and the times were changes so that we weren't together. Despite leaving the room service sign out the room was not serviced and I had to request this from reception. The decor was dated with chairs that were threadbare. The area was dirty with dirty glasses left to pile up to the point where another guest had to ask staff to clear them away. The bar was rarely manned and I had to ask at reception for someone to attend to the bar. At the end of my stay, whilst in the female changing rooms (thankfully changing in the toilet). I left to find two male members of staff in the changing room along with several female members of staff. I did not hear anyone announce that a man was entering the changing room. Would not recommend and would not visit again.

We had a lovely two night stay at Charlton House Hotel recently. Comfortable room (especially the bed), superb shower pressure en suite. Food was good, and good wine selection. The Staff were exemplary, attentive but not overpowering. The spa facilities we experience were really nice, in particular the massage. Thank you

Has a lovely couple of days at Charlton House with my wife. Wanted to get some peace and quiet, with some good food and got exactly that. The hotel was beautiful inside with lots of interesting pictures and old furniture. Staff were very friendly, polite and attentive but not harassing. They let you just get on and enjoy your stay.

We stayed for one night in May 22, first impressions where very good, Spa was amazing, one of the most relaxing massages I’ve ever had. Our evening meal was delicious aswell as breakfast. Drinks are fairly priced too. Now the negatives, our room we stayed in was Duncan’s Den, the room is tired in need of updating, black mould on the reverse of all the blinds in the room and in the corners, these had been there for some time which should not be happening. Stock levels as well ran out of draught beer and gin. Overall we would stay here again mainly due to the spa but not in that room again
