This place is really nice but I think you really need to book on busy days. This weekend the staff seemed quite overwhelmed. The number of people coming and going seems to fluctuate a lot. So obviously if you have a 20 people walking in there will be delays. There is a small kind of walk in bar area (indoors - loads of space outside) so if you want to pop in for a pint on a raining Saturday you will be lucky to get a seat. Having said that after a wee wait we did both days. Food and beer were great. Staff were great even though very busy!

I stopped by here with a group after going on a hike. It took me 15 minutes to get served. This is because there was only one person working the bar. The person in question was lovely, and I can't fault her for her efforts under difficult circumstances, but the fact there was only one person serving customers when there was clearly a lengthy (and growing) line is unforgivable. Even airport security is better than this. Needless to say I will not be returning.

We came for my 80th birthday with family and friends. The weather had been super hot all day, and there were large numbers of people enjoying sitting outside when 16 of us arrived for 6pm, so the staff had clearly been very busy for several hours. Nevertheless, they were calm, helpful and we had a good meal. They helped my daughters with the birthday cake and candles without any fuss and made sure we had everything we needed, and they must actually have been exhausted. I saw Charlotte when I booked it and she was lovely, and very efficient. Thankyou to you all.

Stopped in for Sunday dinner on one of the hottest and busiest weekends of the summer season. It was packed, the staff were hot and run ragged, items run out on the menu and the bar was organised chaos, to put it mildly. The service was very frosty and at times I would go as far as to say surly; but given the circumstances I don't think it would be fair to say they could help feeling overwhelmed. The food was as good as it always is and arrived in great time, the pork belly was especially good and a generous portion given the price. The white wine was also lovely and chilled which is surprising given how busy it was, the bar staff must have really kept on top of the fridges. We cleared our own table and enjoyed our meal in the sunshine outside with our children and went home reasonably happy. We will avoid the place on busy days in the future as we are sticklers for customer service, but we are local ans have visited before when it is quieter and very much enjoyed our time there.

The Fox House is a fairly standard Vintage Inn, unpretentious but with good food and service, the kind of place you’d feel just as at ease going for a meal, or just popping in for a drink. A beautiful old building, on a junction where four roads meet. Massive free car park, no worries about having to input your car details. Lots of bus services stop outside to Sheffield and various places in the Peak District. Could perhaps do with a better choice of local beers. Staff friendly and efficient.

Made a visit to this pub to celebrate wifes birthday so whole family came, plus and a very big plus ➕ we needed a dog friendly pub to accommodate our new addition a 3 month old pug called Wilson. I gave them a call to confirm a booking for 4 as it fell on bank holiday weekend and more so to double check they were happy to accept our pooch. The pub is situated in the peak district and has 360 degrees of stunning views that are breath taking to say the least. On arrival we were met with smiles all round from the staff, which was a refreshing change and nothing was too much trouble for them. We all had Rib Eye steaks and they were cooked to perfection, followed by deserts and a couple of rounds of drinks and price wise was very good value for money, so all in all a great venue to visit with great views, we will definitely be going back again.

Excellent meal lovely food and really good service. My husband has the lamb dish and I went for prawn skewers, both of which was lovely. Service was efficient and staff were very attentive. The pub itself was lovely decor and very clean. Will definitely return.

We had a lunch time meal at the Fox house. Scarlet was lovely and attentive. She was very helpful concerning my special dietary requirements and including all the staff. We love going there and made to feel welcome. It is a cosy friendly place to be. Thank you.

Went in for a few pints on saturday after an afternoon walk, Luke was so lovely and welcoming and made our day! Would definitely recommend if looking to unwind after a walk in the peaks.

Lady that worked front of house was very accommodating and assisted us in a difficult situation with dog. Would highly recommend, food amazing as always. Will be back for our Sunday roast

Very lovely pub, had a great lunch and the service was fairly quick despite it being pretty busy. Prices were standard for a pub lunch, the mini desserts with a hot drink were very good value and I really enjoyed that. Good amount of parking and in the Peak District, would come here again.

My visit was a mixed bag. The pub itself is so very welcoming. Every single member of staffwe came across were so incredibly polite, warm and welcoming. What a fantastic team you have there. Sadly my chicken breast in the chicken forestierre was so dry I could not eat the full dish, despite being very hungry. I also thought the mini mango torte was bland and tasteless. I did not mention the chicken at the time as I was part of a group of 6 and it seemed that others didn't have any issues with their meal. We had booked rooms for the night and were pleasantly surprised in seeing our friends rooms on the ground floor, complete with sofa and large bathroom. However our room turned out to be a nightmare. We could not get to the toilet properly without walking sideways due to the bathroom being so tiny. The sink was so close to the toilet that we could have brushed our teeth whilst sitting on the toilet. We laughed this off and it didn't matter for one night. What made us vow never to return was the bed. We're both seasoned travellers yet we agreed that it was the worst bed we've ever stayed in. The mattress felt the same as an unyielding block of concrete and our hips shoulders and backs were very painful after just an hour. We discussed sleeping in the car, or taking it in turns to sleep in the chair. Sadly we could not return home as we'd had a couple of glasses of wine with our meal. There was no possibility of getting another quilt to lie on or a topper either as it is obviously a lodge attached to a close pub at night. I'm still suffering with terrible back, hip and shoulder ache now. I was particularly disappointed as I was in desperate need of a rest having dealt with a very sad and difficult family situation in the weeks running up to our break. I'd also already decided to book a night away with my husband at the fox house (we were staying as a group of friends) but despite our friends having a better night in their not quite so hard beds, I have to say that I couldn't book to stay here again, unless the beds were updated. Even a Premier Inn doesn't skimp on a good quality mattress. Thankfully the lady who welcomed us at breakfast was so wonderfully kind and welcoming and the breakfast (smashed advacado, eggs, hummus etc) was truly delightful and one of the nicest breakfasts I've had in a long time. So all in all it was a mixed bag. Faultless staff, decor, ambiance, views, drinks and breakfast.... but a shockingly poor mattress and awful evening meal left me with no desire to return. Such a shame.

Great place, nice food & dog friendly. Nice to go after a day walking around dovedale. A bit out way for a solo visit but it's definitely worth a visit if in the area.
