First off, this is a nice old pub - a proper pub. Thought we’d give the food a go one night. To be fair, the food was pretty good but for the prices, you could have gone to a ‘proper’ restaurant and got pimped up versions. I think they need to realise they are a pub and price accordingly. But, to reiterate, decent enough food.

Only staying in Ipswich for a couple of nights and wanted to get off the waterfront captive area for food. Just behind the marina we found this corner pub. Great place, old original beams and open fires. lots of little spaces to eat, great pub atmosphere. I have ham, egg and chips, all good value and super hot chunky crisp chips. My partner had lamb shank, which just fell of the bone and very tasty. Staff helpful, table service, good beer and wine.

Staying not far away for a couple of nights and we visited here for a meal. Very quiet on the night we were there but it was the Easter holidays so not many students around. The pub had a very friendly atmosphere and we sat next to the fire which was very welcome on a wet cold April night. Food was typical pub grub but well done with good sized portions. Beer was very good.

We have not been able to get to our favourite pub due to a physical ailment that prevented my husband from walking. We were so excited to be able to finally get there and immediately decide fish and chips were needed. We’ve eaten this dish many times before but on this occasion I was disappointed. The fish was lovely but the chips tasted as if they’d been cooked a lot earlier and were actually only lukewarm. The prices had crept up I think because three fish and chip meals, two pints and a white wine spritzer costs £71. Not for the faint hearted I think. That sort of money is a lot for a meal that was at best only very average so I think next time we will just stick to the beer. I might add, their beer is always excellent and the service this time was also a lot better than it has been in the past. Other times we’ve eaten it’s taken far too long to clear the table and dirty plates had been pushed to the side for well over half an hour after we had all finished. We continue to visit purely because it’s one of the only decent pubs for miles. The waterfront pubs are really just places to be seen rather than venues that have real pub ambience. The real atmosphere of a traditional pub is fast fading and the Lord Nelson is one of only a few that still have this genuine warmth.

This is a fab traditional pub with friendly staff and a good atmosphere, good range of drinks, average prices. Had a lovely evening with friends on a Saturday night.

This was a Sunday lunch with friends from London who are used to quality lunch outlets and to hear them say this is by far the best Sunday lunch they had ever had was no surprise to us as the food is plentiful, hot, well presented fresh and so tasty. My wife and I had the pork our friends the beef and it was perfect we had the addition of probably the best cauliflower cheese we had tasted it was great. We spent 4 hours at our table drinking fine wines and eating good food and were served by very good staff who were chatty and happy to help with anything. At the end the bill was a total surprise and was much less than expected. We will return very soon

The Pub Staff are so friendly and fantastically helpful. The group of 4 of us came to Ipswich for the weekend as we came to The Town 50 years ago to sign on as boy sailors at HMS Ganges. We wandered from where we were staying on Saturday and found this lovely old fashion Pub with real Ale, the staff with their cheeky humour to Four old Farts old enough to be their grand parents? We used the pub again on Sunday evening to have food as well. The Pub is Dog friendly which is a Plus, I and my 3 colleagues would use this establishment again and recommend it to everyone as a very hospitable place

Went here for a nice quiet drink first time in the area, it was a lovely cosy atmosphere next to a gorgeous log fire just what we wanted, until someone started playing the piano, I'm not talking about background entertainment it was a piano just anyone could clearly just sit and play on. Sadly the person playing could not play and it was awful and so loud I couldn't sit and relax and hear my husband, we would have stayed for more drinks and for a meal but my ears just couldn't cope with the noise. If your going out for a drink or meal you don't want someone playing a piano loudly who can't even play, no wonder we were the only 2 people in the pub, awful idea having a piano in a pub that just anyone can sit at and try and play.
