Service and food is great. They have a very friendly and attentive staff. I go about twice a month and I am never disappointed.

The bistro is on the first floor (stairs or lift) and traditionally decorated with dark wood, heavy silverware, mirrors and quirky art. On Sunday, there's a chef's table to start; soup and a good array of fish, meats and vegetable salads. Special mention for the marinated salmon and a spicy hummous. Roast beef was plentiful, tender and properly pink; the accompanyiong vegetables were all delicious: roasties with rosemary, chantenay carrots, perfectly (ie barely) cooked shredded cabbage and sticky roast parsnips. None of us, however, was impressed with the giant, dry Yorkshires, ubiquitous on a Sunday roast these days. I wish chefs would get over size and concentrate on a pud which has both crispness and a squidgy bit at the bottom. Two small ones are much more welcome than a giant puffball. One of the party chose black sea bass which she said was excellent. We couldn't manage desserts but indulged in some cocktails in the adjacent bar. Drinks prices are typical for a 4* hotel on the river - £12 for a glass of Lanson champagne, similar for a 250ml serving of a decent Rioja. Cocktails are around £12. Terrific service by Tessie and colleagues who were attentive but not intrusive.

Went for afternoon tea and thought £27 was the price for two as it didn't clarify on the menu but got a massive shock when we got the bill and found out that that was the price per person with a service charge on top of that, which again was hefty and we didn't know about. Came away dissapointed and out of pocket- £60 out of pocket! All for a couple of sandwiches, scones and tea. Parts of it was very appetising and it was a lovely setting to be in but my partner couldn't eat some of it as some of the flavours were a bit out there- not a traditional afternoon tea at all. Good view of the quayside and friendly staff but go only if you can afford it and saved up!

I have been to the malmaison bar with freinds and work colleagues many times when we are in the Newcastle area. I have always had a good experience in the past.Unfortunately the last time I went with a few freinds we all ordered cocktails, the bartender managed to get ALL our drinks wrong! When one of us went to say we got the wrong drink the bartender just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.Overall a very bad experience for a round of drinks which was horrible and which we didn't drink. We will be finding a new place and not going back

Great service, Sophie & Ellie were really helpful and attentive. Helped highlight dishes that would work for a member of the party who is Gluten & dairy free. Food was good, well presented and tasty.

I was taken here by my daughters for a mother's day meal. The food was superb and surprisingly large quantities. I had gorgonzola and pea ravioli but there was also the option of a roast dinner which my daughter had (they didn't have a vegetarian option which was a pity) beautiful food lovely surroundings and excellent service by Tessie. Will definitely return

Try the valentine’s special dishes with cocktails and lobster. The portions are generous and the meat is very fresh and tender. Especially the seafood is delicate and juicy. The sauce of shrimp and scallops for the starter is more Mexican, a little spicy and salty but not overpowering. The truffle fries are crunchy, without the truffle bits on the top but the truffle flavour incorporated into the fries. Dessert is toffee Creme pudding, which is a bit sweet but goes well with ice cream. A very filling and satisfying dinner. The waiters are very friendly and patience.

Booked a cocktail afternoon tea and it was amazing. Thank you to Jessie and Amy for looking after us so beautifully. Food was faultless and dietary requests were dealt with perfectly. Attentive service where we didn't need to ask for anything it was all anticipated for us. I had visited pre covid and was impressed so booked again to celebrate a birthday and was apprehensive in case it wasn't as good as my last visit..it was actually better!! Very relaxed atmosphere not rushed at all we were there 3 hours chatting and enjoying our afternoon tea no time slots like other venues. Would definitely recommend and will be returning...thank you

Had the Mal Afternoon Tea. Tessie was amazing, looked after us during our visit. She asked our names when we got there and remembered them throughout. We can’t fault the service, friendly, personal and not intrusive. The food was different to the usual afternoon tea - little prawn cocktails, burgers, sausage rolls and a spicy wrap. They were all gorgeous. A good selection of small cakes to follow - the chocolate tart was fabulous! We would highly recommend - and look forward to going back. If you fancy something a little bit different, go and try it, you won’t bd disappointed.

One of the best afternoon tea experiences I have had! Amazing service from start to finish especially from Tessie who asked all of our names and remembered them throughout the service which was very personalised and special. She has such a wonderful vibrant personality too. She deserves recognition! The young blonde girl too (so sorry I don’t know her name) was also lovely and made us feel comfortable and that we were dining somewhere special! I had a vegetarian afternoon tea which is probably the best I’ve had, it didn’t just feel like an inconvenience like other places where they just give me extra cheese sandwiches. I had 4 different and lovely savoury options that were very similar to the ‘normal’ afternoon tea which made me feel completely part of the experience which is how it should be but normally isn’t! I was so happy about this. The cakes were absolutely gorgeous and the speed of service and just overall experience. I will be recommending to anyone who asks for a nice afternoon tea and I hope to be back for a meal and hopefully sit at the window looking out over the gorgeous quayside. Thank you for a lovely experience ?☕️?
