We stayed for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast. We also took our Cocker Spaniel with us and he was made to feel very welcome in our room and the restaurant. The room was very comfy and even had covers on the seat for our dog, it was very warm but we were staying on the hottest weekend of the year. It was a great base for exploring and walking in the Brecon Beacons. The highlight however was the food, it was some of the best food we have ever tasted and the side dishes fri the kitchen garden were wonderful, my wife is still talking about the tomato salad we shared with our Hake and Louise’s Cauliflower based vegetarian main. The other evening we had the steak and the cod loin again perfect. The beer and wine were also really good and a great selection. We will definitely be back.

On the strength of a Daily Telegraph review of The Griffin we booked back in March for a stay on their special deal for September. Two nights in a comfortable room with three course dinner each night. We were not disappointed. They have an excellent creative chef with daily tweaks to the menu on offer. We couldn't fault the food on either night, although on the second night the portions defeated us leaving no room to test the sweets. Beds comfortable but the hotel is on a main road, and even with a room at the back it is noisy. The rooms are well equipped and most comfortable. The staff were most welcoming and made every effort to please. The wine list is well marked up but there are some cheaper options to try. One tip - check your bills. We were overcharged £140 - partly picked up by me before paying but the other amount was picked up very quickly when the person responsible for accounts checked in later in the morning. An email of apology was waiting on our return that lunchtime. All sorted the same day - but we finished up with items from other guests charged to our bill. It was hard on the person trying to serve breakfasts and deal with accounts - perhaps someone needs to be on duty a little earlier to deal with guest accounts so this doesn't happen again. This small matter won't prevent us from visiting the Griffin again - if just for a wonderful well presented and tasty evening meal.

I highly recommend this hotel and restaurant. The bedrooms are lovely with small attention to detail such as ground coffee and a cafetière in the room. The bed was so comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious and lots of options for a picky eater and coeliac. Friendly and approachable staff who went above and beyond to look for my wife’s lost phone (we found it). Dog friendly too and again attention to detail with poo bags and feed bowls in the hallway.

This was recommended by Debbie of The Lodge in Garthbrengy (AirBnB home) and lived up to all expectations! The welcome was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and the decor was beautiful. Then the main reason for our visit, the food, was simply delicious and plentiful. The available choice was superb and both my wife’s & my starters and main courses were beautiful presented with fresh Al dente vegetables and perfectly cooked. The price was surprisingly reasonable given that they ticked all the boxes for a gourmet meal out. Will definitely return if we’re back in the area.

This was quite a find! We had no expectations but were pleasantly surprised to discover a really excellent place to eat here. A new chef has recently started apparently and her efforts are to be enjoyed. The crab starter with a ginger dressing was outstanding. Everything else we had (all fish on this occasion - cod and hake for main courses) were delightful. It is a little on the pricey side but worth it nonetheless. Would definitely recommend.

Stopped off on the way back from Builth Wells. What a mistake! Hake with slimy skin still on, not crispy. "Fresh" asparagus I could barely put a fork into, potatoes, absolutely unseasoned and tasteless. A pretend gastro pub that isn't a gastro pub. I was a chef for 40 years, and if this is what passes for gastro food, it fails.

Outstanding. Great menu, great staff and great food. We went for lunch on Saturday and had an excellent time. A fantastic standard of food with either a set menu or a more extensive lunch menu, and super child friendly too. Great setting, We’ll be back!

A foodie’s dream - from start to finish this was an impressive experience. The food was exceptionally good, we enjoyed every mouthful. The starters of smoked salmon and ham hock were very tasty and the sourdough was delicious. The roast beef was up there with the best we’ve ever eaten and the pork belly equally tasty with crispy crackling. All of the trimmings were tasty and I’m not really sure how you make roast potatoes as good as that, it’s a mystery. Backed up by an impressive wine list, this was a real treat. The venue is very spacious and cosy at the same time with a grand open fire. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, we will definitely be back!

We went for Sunday lunch and both agreed that it was one of my best roast lunches that we've ever had! The Yorkshire puddings and the roast potatoes were incredible. Service was friendly and quick. Can't wait to return.

restaurant was expensive, minute portions and the staff were not particularly friendly. Only noticed after paying the bill that a discretionary 12.5% service charge was added. Very poor value for money.

We had the most amazing time. Food: outstanding, staff: friendly and knowledgeable, surroundings: warm and welcoming. Can’t wait to return.

Warm welcome, lovely detailed touches, proper fire and sofas, relaxed social atmosphere, some of the best food I’ve eaten in the UK. We love this place.
