Went for a late afternoon Sunday lunch. Service and food ran very smoothly and we sat out on the decking which has lovely views. Only reason for 3 stars for atmosphere is that it was a bit quiet at this time of day. Probably much busier at the 1pm lunch time period.

Stopped off here by chance on way back from Stratford upon Avon, had 2 meals pork belly, mash with cabbage & the fish & chips both were amazing, very tasty, just enough & staff were great too, had food outside on back terrace & view to die for & plenty of parking

An unpleasant experience. The management had clearly decided to cram as many covers as possible into all parts of the building (in multi sittings). We found ourselves crammed into the corner of a side room, where there was no heating, and despite the presence of secondary glazing, a cold draught. My wife, like 3 nearby diners, kept her coat on. I had to swap my chair with a spare from a table for 4. It was on a state of near collapse. The menu was a disappointment - my wife's roast belly pork was delivered under a gravy with a consistency of blancmange. Little thought had been paid to the vegetables, which were massed onto the plate. A large parsnip, a similarly sized carrot and a large serving of warm red cabbage. A giant Yorkshire pudding and somewhere, potato, one 'roast' and some mashed. Avoiding the ubiquitous 'beer battered fish', I thought that The Red Lion Burger might offer some innovation, but I was wrong. Small and tasteless, on a barely warm plate, with a scattering of flaccid garnish an a piece of bacon, the edge of which was cold. We couldn't finish, and we didn't dare examine the desserts. I sense that the Red Lion has changed hands since our last visit, when the catering was a delight. This was not. The advertisement in plain view by the car park seeks applications from aspiring chefs. The sooner, the better.

Hadn't visited here for a meal since 2006 so didn't really know what to expect. When we arrived for dinner at 7pm with friends car park quite full so we knew would be busy. First issue as soon as we walked in we had to navigate past children running around to get to the bar to find our table..could easily have put a 'please wait here to be seated' sign inside the main door. Our table was directly in line with the said front door which kept opening with said children. Food once it arrived was very tasty BUT the portion was on the smaller size. Vegetables on everyone's plate was a small shredding of cooked cabbage, nothing else apart from the potato part of each dish. It would have been so lovely to each have a portion of mixed vegetables rather than have to order them as an extra. One person had the last portion of beef bourginon which tasted okay but only had 4 pieces of meat approx 2cm cubed (no offer of cheaper price as obviously not a full amount). In all we didn't expect to be dining in a creche. I accept that children now form part of parents nights out but there was no control whatsoever or restrictions of where they should go. Expensive for the amount of food we had. Sorry to leave such a review but as previously said we hadn't been for so many years (moved out of country, recently moved back) and were disappointed on the areas highlighted.

Fantastic place to eat, friendly and welcoming staff. Food was delicious and great value for money. Dogs are made very welcome and they have a pet station where they bring over a small bowl of water and a treat which is great. Can’t fault the food the gammon was cooked perfectly and was very thick tender and moist tasted amazing cooked to perfection. The staff are friendly and really do look after you asking if everything is okay did we need anymore drinks. We have visited with a large group of us so I can say the other items available on the menu were cooked beautifully. The desserts are amazing the Crème Brûlée is perfect can’t fault anything. If you want a friendly and welcoming place to eat I highly recommend visiting, staff are friendly, professional and caring nothing is too much for them and the food is truly delicious. Well worth visiting and the views are amazing.

Had lunch, fish and chips were ok, the chilli beef salad was ok, flavours ok, some of the beef was soft, some not so much. The Eton Mess was a long way short of an Eton Mess. The setting is amazing and the food could be great, the dishes seemed tired somehow and as the menu is being revised, we will return will when that has been accomplished. Service was lovely.

Stopped here for a lunch break travelling from NW to a funeral in the South. Thought it would be better than the motorway services - BIG MISTAKE, as in huge!!! My wife's bangers and mash were ... well, ok, BUT my: "HOT ROAST BEEF BAGUETTE Topside beef soaked in onion gravy, served in a warm baguette topped with melted cheese, fries" was just plain AWFUL!! Gristly bits of inedible "topside beef"(really??) - most of which were left on the plate and which did not even elicit a comment from our male server. Even my wife commented that it looked pretty awful. It was! And for pudding?? Apple & blackberry with custard. Well, the big lumps of apple were largely undercooked and the crumble resembled the closest thing to warm sugared sawdust that I have ever eaten! You'd need a magnify to spot any blackberries lurking in there - I don't think I found even one. It wasn't that expensive, it's true, but it truly was awful. So much so, that when we sadly had to travel to yet another funeral, neither of us wanted to go anywhere near the Claverton Red Lion ever again. Instead, we chose the Welcome Break, South Corley Services and both had KFC and it was by comparison absolutely top drawer!! And it cost less than half the price we'd paid for our ghastly lunch. Yup, it was a lesson well and truly learned.

Just back from a meal for two...our first visit. One steak and ale pie and one chilli beef salad later we left very happy...and full. Extensive menu at reasonable prices. Open kitchen which I always love to see...nothing to hide :) Great service from Carl (despite his injured foot). When you get service like his it reminds you how often it is missing elsewhere. Wines are reasonably priced too. We'll be back...might try the Sunday roast next time.

The online booking facility led me to make a reservation at the Red Lion for Saturday night. Good choice - the food, service and atmosphere were all excellent. The menu isn't the usual gastro-pub fare, with some subtle variations offering a wider choice. Overall it was a cracking night out. We shall return - thanks to all those involved.
