I booked this pub because it said dogs welcome, we were not asked if we were taken dogs, yet on being given a table we were dogs could not be in that area of pub. Instead of sorting us out another table the Manager was quiet rude about it & made it sound like it was our problem! The menu said they served gluten free gravy & then they said they didn’t - I’m a ceoliac - my husband got gravy from the local co-op for them! The food was lack lustre, poor effort, over cooked. The bar staff were good at least, management issue. Don’t bother, poor experience, too ecxpensive.

We visited the pub on Wednesday lunchtime and there were 5 of us. 2 adults and 3 children. We were shown to a table and were relieved to see they weren't overly busy as the children were very hungry. We gave our order to the manager who was working the restaurant and she kindly brought out 3 very small pieces of cheesy garlic bread to keep them going while the kitchen did the table next to us who had ordered before us.Thats where it went wrong....The tables who came in long after us were getting their food one after the other while we waited and waited. The manager didn't courtesy check us what so ever and no explanation was given.I went to the bar twice to ask what was going on and the girl was extremely embarrassed but was unable to answer my questions. After waiting for over an hour with the children watching other tables getting their food and getting more upset we paid for what we'd had and left.It wasn't a complicated order. 3 kids meals, a curry and a chicken burger.Last time we visited back in October we had an excellent experience but we will never go back and I am currently in contact with the brewery.

The bar staff during our visit were pleasant. No problem there. The issue was with the food. Four of us waited at least 35 minutes before being served the Baked Camembert (2 couples sharing two portions). It was to be served with cranberry sauce and toast.Well, what a disappointment that was! Almost £15 per portion and it was served with processed brown bread, barely toasted. Very limp and completely unappetising. What not served with toasted sourdough or a decent slice of bread at least? But worse was to come. Attempting to eat the cheese, one had to be careful not to bite on RAW WHOLE GARLIC just pressed into the cheese! Two of us crunched into garlic and of course, this just about destroyed our palettes for the rest of this visit. This was just awful - we all agreed this was not a place to return too. No one asked if we were happy with the food of course. Had we not had to pay up front, I am sure none of us would have been happy to pay for this!

Superb. Nice choice of beers, good food, and terrific service. We called for a late lunch just before the kitchen shut expecting to be turned away but a very friendly landlady was only too pleased to seat and serve us. The burgers were thick and delicious, the fish and chips huge and the gammon thick and tasty. Definitely worth the visit.

Called 5 mins before arriving & booked a table for two late Sunday afternoon as passing through Petworth, a really lovely old pub which is a bit of a tardis given the outside dimensions.Lovely smiley helpful young waitress & equally nice manager/landlady & faultless food.Really pleased with tripped over the Star & can't fault the place.

Went in around 15.00 for 2 Sunday Roasts, couldn't of wanted for a better meal in a better environment. Smart, clean & tasteful old school pub restaurant with friendly, warm & helpful staff. Looks small from the outside but cleverly extended inside with a sympathetic nod to the age & style of the building. Highly recommended place if in Petworth.

Lovely place when you just want to chill. Especially after a long day. Staff are wonderful and the place is just great.

Can't comment on the food as did not order as the prices were exorbitant. Nearly £20 for Fish and Chips or a Burger and chips. Appreciate there is high inflation atm but they are gastro pub London prices in an old pub in a market town.

We have stopped there for drinks twice and once for Sunday roast. On all three occasions the staff where friendly. The Sunday roast was superb and the service manufic. We prebooked our roast and table to ensure we had a seat and food.Dogs are welcome in the outside seating area and bar.Lovely pub, worth a visit.
