The Black Horse
The Black Horse, 63 Orchard Rd, Melbourn, RoystonThis used to be mine and my ex’s local - well… it still is his, but after a year I thought I’d finally leave a review.
I visited quite a few times while we were together. Despite the company occasionally being questionable (the ex, not the pub), I genuinely had a great time here. In fact, I even helped clean the place in the mornings a couple of times, which I absolutely loved. Having spent a lot of time around pubs growing up, there’s something weirdly satisfying about being in a proper old-school boozer before it opens - sweeping up, chatting, and then eventually enjoying a well-earned drink. It felt very authentic and honestly was one of the highlights of being there.
I’d heard the odd story about the place being a bit cliquey, but I really didn’t find that at all. Everyone seemed friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed, and it had exactly the kind of character you want from a proper local pub - the sort of place where you can sit for hours without realising how much time has passed.
Google asks about the food in reviews, and I’ll be honest - I’ve never actually eaten here. However, after helping clean the pub a few times I can say the kitchen was ALWAYS spotless. Seriously, so clean. If the state of the kitchen is anything to go by, they clearly take a lot of pride in the place.
It’s a genuinely lovely pub with beautiful surroundings and a great beer garden. The scenery alone makes it worth a visit, especially on a sunny day when the garden is the perfect spot for a drink.
All in all, the pub was fantastic - the only thing I’d change about my visits there would probably be the ex. But thankfully the pub itself is still very much worth recommending!

The Flying Dragon
1 Saxon Way, Melbourn, RoystonThe Flying Dragon was outstanding. It's out the way.
Order was made by phone and we were there 15mins early at the pick point location which is out of the way.
But the food was excellent and we will be back.
There's a old saying
