We went to this restaurant as we were staying in the hotel. The only option was a 3 course meal for £50pp the food was below par and very very small. We saw one couple walk out and another complain of portion size. We came here a year ago and there was a normal menu but this was very disappointing. Will not visit again.

Menu very limited and not the choices it had before. No chips or burgers or sandwiches. We were the only ones in there and we watched at least 10 people come in and walk out because of the menu. One of the team told a person it’s the owner’s decision and what he wants he gets. Obviously wants to run at a loss.

Not sure what happened during the visits of previous recent reviewers, but ours was very enjoyable. For reference, we went on a Friday lunchtime.Menu was limited but that's often a good sign, especially for a restaurant which has recently undergone a rebranding. We ordered the beef pie, the chicken salad and the ploughman's. Portion sizes were certainly appropriate for the price considering it is a tourist attraction and it all tasted lovely. The food even came in prison-style trays which was a nice nod to history!Service was faultless; a highlight. Both our servers were welcoming, friendly and attentive. Speed of service was ideal as well. The setting of the restaurant is a nice blend of the contemporary whilst still incorporating elements of its past.I would highly recommend eating here if you are in the Bodmin area. Empty trays all round!

We had lunch in the Hangman Restaurant. Situated at the end of the Camel Trail so ideal for cyclists. Nice food and lovely staff BUT it is ridiculously overpriced. Jaw dropping prices for simple things. We are local but sadly we won't be back.

A confusing experience. This restaurant seems to be half way through changing to ‘The Jolly Hangman’ so we arrived to a set menu style setup, completely different from the restaurant we thought we’d booked a few weeks ago.Starters were excellent, though portion sizes varied massively. The crab was delicious, eaten in two bites. Arancini balls were also lovely, though a much bigger dish with four balls. Main dishes come with no sides, so you must add them yourself at £5 a pop. I paid £5 for a tea cup of chips, which was lucky as my main dish was so disappointing, at least I had something to eat. Avoid the pumpkin dish, though I’m told the beef was very good. Our first experience with a member of staff was so odd, we were all left cringing. He kept trying to make jokes that nobody understood, then would just wait in awkward silence. As the menu only listed ‘£50 for 3 courses’ I asked if we could have 2 courses instead and what the price would be. The response “You can have four courses for twice the price.” Our server kept repeating this every time I asked the question. Eventually he said he didn’t know the price for two courses, but it was probably £40ish. When I asked a question about a dish on the menu, he simply said “I don’t know”, without offering to find out - which I then asked if he could do. Drinks left on our bill which we ordered but we’re then out of stock. A different member of staff took over our table, who was much much better. There seemed to be half an attempt at fine dining, with the portion sizes, presentation and pricing. But the service, tables and menus riddled with grammatical errors made it all a bit scrappy. It also seems so odd that all food is brought through the main entrance door from the kitchen upstairs, so that every time food arrives a gust of cold wind follows.I wouldn’t go back.

Had lunch here with my family after visiting the jail; the bistro is well presented and looks promising; the portion size is insufficient for the price however; I ordered a ploughman’s style lunch, which came with 2 thin wafers of bread, in significant disproportion to the accompanying cheese I was served. When I asked for some more bread, I was advised there would be an additional charge for this. The lovely waitress sympathised and offered some free drinks. We were grateful for this kind gesture on her part, but ultimately, I was left questioning the absurd management decision around this ‘bread policy’; very strange.

I really wanted to enjoy this place after an excellent trip to the jail. Menu was confusing not clear about cream teas. Orders confused. Food cold although was corrected by the manager. Coke was flat. I think so much potential but needs to be slicker and staff more proactive. Not a cheap place. Can reccomend the scone which did taste good but that's it tbh

My partner and I visited the Jail yesterday for her birthday weekend.. Not been for 10 years and really enjoyed it. Loved the jail and on the way out we decided to pop in the cafe for some coffees. The guy behind the counter said "just go and sit down, it's table service" .. We stayed and waited a few minutes watching the waitress wandering past us clearing tables before we decided we'd be better off going to get a coffee somewhere else instead of awkwardly returning to the counter. Fully recommend the jail visit but the cafe (on this occasion) let the place down.

Visited for a lunch whilst on holiday. Late lunch but went on review from internet comments. Was very quiet when we arrived. Got sat outside with dogs and looked over menu. First shock was the price of items. But because we had nowhere else planned and we were late decided to stay. Our Dogs were given water which was a plus and we ordered drinks and our meals which was a bit of a chore as we asked for an extra ingredient on a pizza which the waiter took forever to change on his overly complicated I pad. Our coke zeros arrived, flat. Then the pizza and ploughman's lunch. The pizza was ok but probably still not worth the price. My ploughmans lunch on the other hand was disgusting consisted or 3 small triangles of Cornish cheeses, 2 slices of chorizo, 2 slices of Serrano ham and 2 slices of ham. Accompanied by a couple chutneys a dirty unwashed salad and 2 stale bits of bread. Only up is I didn't pay for the ploughmans as I sent it back with my complaints. So for a basic pizza fries and 2 drinks still managed to pay £27.00

The experience was a lovely time with family staff lovely . Food was good but my big fault was that the chips had salt put on them so I was unable to eat them but the dog did enjoy the chips. I don't understand why they came with salt on when as a customer there is salt on table if you wish to add it to your meal Next time I come over I will try to ask for no salt on chips Ali

We went for our sons birthday meal I really wish we would have chosen another restaurant! Absolutely awful service from the staff they was more interested in talking to each other and asking the Cornish guests if they needed anything drinks etc.we had to wait 15 minutes for our one drink they asked us if we wanted, all our food come out at different times it was a family party of 5 so not a huge table. We live in Bodmin and I wanted to take our son and my parents to a nice restaurant for my sons 19th birthday sadly I was left feeling really dismissed and forgotten as was my family. I haven’t had this sort of service in any other restaurant I have eaten in in the surrounding areas or villages. My husband mentioned how we was left feeling to the staff member when we had to ask for our bill as all the staff walked straight past our table multiple times and we got ignored. And her response was just sorry but said with no emotion at all!One of the staff stood behind the bar filling up the mayonnaise in pots and some spilt on the side of the dish she wiped it with her finger then licked her finger and continued to fill up pots using her finger to wipe the dishes my husband was speechless.Food was ok when it all arrived. But sadly service was awful. We didn’t even get asked if we wanted dessert after they cleared the plates. It was our sons birthday! It’s a shame as it’s a lovely looking venue was really looking forward to eating with my family on this special occasion and was left deeply disappointed.Summary really is if you want to be ignored and get one drink but have to ask staff for any assistance as they don’t acknowledge you at all. We paid for our bill which was over two hundred pound and left. I wouldn’t recommend going here at all and I won’t be returning.

Visited prior to the Ghost Walk. The restaurant has a really nice feel and atmosphere. We had starters and mains. Two calamari which were great, my husband had spicy prawns which consisted of four mid size prawns which was very disappointing as he said they were delicious. We all had fish and chips which was cooked perfectly and good sized portions. We were too full for desserts. I felt the staff were very friendly and efficient and we would return.
