This is the second year we have visited this pub, Miguel might be a bit standoffish but once you get chatting he is a fountain of knowledge about where to eat and drink in Penzance, he also runs a decent pub and keeps his beer well. very unusual interior and well worth a visit. Don't take the kids or the dog!

This tiny pub has lovely traditional decor and is cosy. There is a good choice of real ale (which is what I look for when choosing a pub) and the one pint I had was fresh and well kept. Unfortunately, my low score is based on the owner/barman, who seemed totally uninterested to make any attempt to make us welcome at the establishment. My husband asked for a couple of small samples of ale before choosing, and it would appear he was lucky to be allowed some, given previous reviews. We were served brusquely and quickly, and were charged £13 for two pints, a tad overpriced than others in the town. We sat outside to avoid the steely atmosphere and then moved on to the Crown, just up the street, where the atmosphere and staff were total opposites to the sour staff at the Lamp & Whistle.

Arrived with my little one in the afternoon to have a quick drink with my husband and the man by the bar just shouted “no kids allowed”. The pub has benches to seat outside so my husband went to buy a beer and was refused to get a beer by the bar man again saying he couldn’t go with the glass outdoors, although there was a couple that just got beers with glass cup just in front my husband, got their beers and went to seat outside. Horrible, unfriendly place plus we felt discriminated for being tourists and parents trying to have a nice family holidays.

Great beer (Inc. Clwb Tropica), but the landlord was a grumpy git.Pulled a face when I asked to try a couple of the beers despite this being standard practice when there is a variety of unusual beers. At £13 for a couple of pints I think checking them out first is essential. If you're thinking of going for good beer with a great welcome, turn round and go to The Crown 200m up the road instead. Great beer selection at under £5 a pint and nicely decorated too.

The rudest most miserable bar tender we've ever come across. Such a shame as we'd seen photos of the decor on Facebook. But when we got there we realised that it's probably friendly to locals

Rude and unwelcoming bar tender who refused to serve us. We are both middle aged tourists, well dressed, well spoken and completely sober. As former publicans this was a first for both of us !!! We were so stunned we went straight back to the air b & b directly across the road to process what had just happened. It was a bizarre and unwarranted experience. If you'd rather not risk being humiliated in front other customers, give this pub a miss.

Walked in the door and barman immediately told us they had stopped serving at 10 pm. Whatever was going on, the few locals seemed to be in on it. This was an hour before regular closing time. We were both well dressed, well spoken and sober. We were staying directly across the road in an Airbnb. Perhaps they didn't like anyone staying there. So don't go out of your way for this place.

Such a shame the landlord is so rude. I can't tell if he thought we were tourists (we live locally) or just hates women, but I've never had such grumpy service anywhere.Amazing beer selection, decor, music, atmosphere.Just ruined by a rude and condescending barman.Don't ask what the beers taste like or ask to try them before shelling out nearly £7 a pint.I saw him chatting away to men in the bar so he must be capable of good service. Just not to us, sadly.

Lovely pub full of excellent trinkets and artwork and a good range of beer. Splendid folk run it too

One of Penzance’s gems! A really good range of, well kept, beers from local ale to some Belgian corkers. There is seating outside and ample space inside. Is this pub for me?If you’re looking for a well run beer pub then it is right up your street. If you feel at home in a standard chain pub you’d best stay away and leave room for those that appreciate quality. The landlord is lovely, he looked after us well on our weeks stay in Penzance. If you read the one star reviews and see yourself in the person writing then stay away! All in, the best pub in town!

Quirky decor nice selection of beers. One of most misrarble landlords ever. You wonder why some people in hospitality. Not alone....check out numerous trip advisor negative reviews. If you not from Penzance do not enter here. Just put a note on door saying locals only. I'd hate to be that miserable ?
