We have previously eaten at Romneys various times over many years and have generally found it to be a decent place to go. Although had not been there since Covid. We recently booked a table over the Christmas holidays for a family meal. My wife checked at the time of booking if dogs were permitted in the dinning area, as I unfortunately have pet allergies and tend to struggle indoors in places where dogs are permitted free reign. She was told that no dogs were allowed in the dining area, but that they were permitted in the bar (fairly typical for most pubs), so we went ahead and booked. Upon arrival there were no spaces in the car park, so had to park some distance away on a side road. When we entered, the place was full and we were shown past the bar area into the dinning area (past a sign that stated no dogs allowed). We were then shown to a really nice table - but right next to another group which had a dog! Not only that, despite bing on a lead, the dog was being allowed to 'wander' by the owner into our area. I then asked the waitress if dogs were allowed in the dinning area and she said that they were "making exceptions". I explained that I had pet allergies and would not be able to sit next to a table with a dog. She then went off and came back to say that there was another table available, which we moved to - however this was much smaller and literally right next to the bar area. Furthermore, there was not a hint of fresh air in the place (hot, humid, windows steamed up etc.), so this was clearly not going to be my night! As this was a Friday evening at a busy time, it was not possible to find an alternative place to eat - therefore, rather than spoil the evening for everyone, I decided to leave. For matters of health and hygiene I choose not to eat in establishments that allow dogs in dinning areas, so I rely on businesses being clear on what their policy is and sticking to it.

We were visiting the area for a family holiday and to my amazement managed to make a last minute New Year’s Eve booking for dinner at Romney’s. The place was understandably bustling but with a really lovely atmosphere. The staff were so welcoming to both our children, and our dog! The carvery was the best I’ve had in a long time and everything such excellent value. We’re already planning a return trip! I can’t recommend this place enough.

We were very lucky indeed. We were like very many people caught out by the snow on Saturday 2 December. We had booked a cottage in Ambleside for a week, but the road to Ambleside from the roundabout five miles from the M6 was completely blocked by snow. Fortunately, we just managed to get to Kendal, where we found Romneys. They were great. Our party was three adults and a three-month old infant. As luck would have it, they had a two-bed self-catering apartment available, which was clean, well equipped and lovely and warm. It was just what we needed. We dined in their restaurant, which was really very good indeed. The menu was expansive and the food was plentiful, good quality, well cooked and very tasty. It was also decent value, which was another bonus. We had a lovely table out of the way of the other diners so we could feed the three-month-old without disturbing anyone; in short, they looked after us very well indeed. In this regard, we have to say a very special thanks to the duty manager Polly, who was extremely attentive throughout our stay, despite having quite a few extra, unexpected visitors to deal with as a consequence of the snow. A very efficient, polite and helpful young lady who knows how to make her guests feel welcome. In fact, she voluntarily held on to our room for the Sunday in case we didn't make it to Ambleside and had to turn back; and didn't charge us a penny for it, which was absolutely brilliant. Totally unexpected and we're not sure if too many other places would have done that? Fortunately, we made it, albeit very slowly, but with the reassurance that we had somewhere to stay for the night if we didn't manage to get there. So as you can see, we were very impressed by Romneys and would go there again without hesitation.

Stayed in Snug 3 with partner. Was a brilliant stay! Rooms are beautiful designed, very practical, clean and welcoming. Would stay again. Although don't wear fluffy socks on the spiral staircase as you don't want to slip! A must stay for those that love old fashioned oak and stone walls on show. Bathroom in Snug 3 is amazing, massive bath great after a long drive or sightseeing. Pub and staff are brilliant, very friendly and quick service. Meals are fantastic would recommend the hunters chicken and fudge cake to everyone. Will be staying again! Don't have a single complaint!

We have been visiting the area and ate at Romneys twice. We were happy with our meals on both occasions. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and attentive ( not overly so). Would definitely visit again if we return to the area.

We are a party of 8 and travel to the Lakes every year in November. We have stopped at Romneys for lunch on the way up for the past 4 years and never been disappointed. The food is excellent and can't fault the service. We are made to feel very welcome by the lovely staff who go out of their way to accommodate any requests. They even offered to let the dog in the restaurant as they weren't too busy even though dogs are only allowed in the bar area. We will definitely be going back next November as we have already booked our accommodation.

We had a lovely evening here Saturday for my birthday. Separate allergy menu was lovely for one family member who needs gluten free food and she had a good selection to choose from.Staff serving were great, helpful and friendly throughout the evening. We shared some sides instead of all having starters and all chose different main courses that all arrived at the same time.Thoroughly great time had by us all.Dietary restrictions: Very clear and well laid out information on the allergy menu. One family member who need to avoid gluten and one with a peanut allergy and it’s always reassuring to have information clearly presented and staff who appear well informed.

Absolutely love this place! Lovely, welcoming atmosphere and attentive, friendly staff. The food is amazing and very reasonably priced. Wide selection of drinks to choose from, including great beer, wine and cocktails! I have to recommend the pink gin fizz! ? Large, secure, covered play area at the side, leading to a large garden with seating. Lots of parking. Very dog friendly, we have been taking our puppy and the staff have been so kind and helpful. The perfect place to unwind and relax. You can tell that the owners and their team all care about the venue and customers as everywhere is very well kept and clean and everyone is happy and smiling! Thank you for many lovely evenings Romneys and many more to come! ??

We wanted to stop off for lunch on the way home from a holiday in Scotland. I’ll be honest, we were a bit worried about dining at Romneys based on the most recent trip advisor reviews being negative. The feedback was concerning slow service and we didn’t want to have to wait too long since we were to travel a further 3 hours after lunch. We didn’t need to worry. The service was really good. Even the young (seemingly new) staff were very attentive, polite and professional. We ate roast beef Sunday lunch (really good!) and others are from the main menu. Lamb shank was applauded, as was the pancetta starter. We asked if we could buy an extra Yorkshire pudd for our 12 year old) as they were sooooo good and we were kindly given one wrapped to take away for the journey. The building and setting is really lovely and toilets clean. We would definitely come back. Thanks to all staff. Your hard work and diligence doesn’t go unnoticed.
