We went when it was the Dickensian festival. Pub was absolutely heaving, but we had booked a table in advance. We were taken to our table immediately. The food was prompt and delicious ?
I was going to say that the Piel Castle is a huge barn of a place, but with the impressive stone walls etc it should perhaps be described as a huge vault or cavern. Whatever descriptive terms we use, there is no doubt that this is an impressive and very attractive pub with beams and exposed rafters aplenty. It is clearly a popular pub and, even on a bitterly cold Wednesday evening, there were several people in. As it is such an unusual and impressive building I was curious to find out what it used to be and was surprised to be told that it has always been a pub. Service was excellent, as were our beers and, as well as probably being the finest looking pub in Ulverston, it is definitely one of the best.
