“This is a true gastropub with as interesting a backstory as any. Concepted and opened in an old, failing pub by a son of the village who made his fortune in Silicon Valley in the USA tech industry and gave back.
Menu is very serious about being unusual, and is well executed. The seasonal squash soup with lemon was exceptional in its richness. Shepherd;s Pie of hoggett, with smoked garlic mash, mint and root veg. richly satisfying. Brixham Monkfish Sandwich is huge -- an American take on a sandwich. Enough for two. Great selection of local beer and soft drinks and startlingly researched wine list. Most servers are deeply committed to the concept and enthusiastic to help. We did come across one grumpy waitress who seemed to be having what Americans would call 'a bad day'. Get seated in the garden if weather affords. This being rural Devon, dogs are mandatory.”
