A fantastic pub, and without a shadow of a doubt- the tastiest home made steak and ale pie I have ever had. Highly recommended

Just been to this fabulous little local pub for dinner tonight. Such a lovely welcome when we arrived. Although we are just visiting on holiday and after reading a very negative review about “ unfriendliness “ this could not have been further from the truth.Things just got better, after relaxing with a pint and a bowl of water brought straight over for a dog, out food arrived. Fantastic traditional home-cooked chicken and ham pie, it was absolutely delicious and a fabulous hearty portion. Please call in if you’re on holiday in and passing by, country pubs like this are sadly few, and far between these days.

Lovely old "proper" pub, no fancy plastic bits! Full of interesting moments, much of which are naval.Owners friendly and welcoming, good beer.

This pub only operates part time hours and frequently closed in the daytime. Meals stop at 8pm. Went in for a drink one evening and bar lady very unfriendly. Attempted to make conversation and just met with a blank. Seemed to only be a handful of locals in the pub and quite empty. Did not get a friendly vibe at all. And when i left, nobody said goodnight as they usually do in other pubs. If a pleasant experience I would have gone back for a meal another time. A couple of days later ended up speaking to a local in Luton the next voillage and she mentioned The Elizabethan and said don't go to The Royal Oak. When I asked why and said I had, she immediatelky said I bet they were not welcoming. She had moved in a couple of years back and visited and said they were quite hostile to her and her husband. Apparently you have to have been born in Ideford and they do not like outsiders. Seems they are not interested in any extra trade., Would never go again.

Fantastic pub….and seriously, per one of the reviews on here, anyone giving 24 hours notice of their impending arrival with their own particular food intolerances to a tiny little pub in a farming village, honestly what were they expecting…..!! I can imagine the raised eyebrows now..!!

Popped in last night for some food.Caroline & Phil were outstanding hosts (as they always are). The Ale (Dartmoor Legend) was wonderful but the highlight was the homemade Steak & Ale Pie (with Mash of course). Caroline’s pet hate is a bad pie ;-)If you want a proper pub (not many like these left) please take my heed and pay a visit :-)
