Comfy country pub with great food and menu choices. Plenty of parking spaces and motorbike space.

Me and my husband have been coming here for years but our Sunday dinner today was awful. We usually get the lamb and it’s amazing. Best Sunday dinner around. But today both of our plates were swimming with water. The gravy had no taste and the turkey and pork were dry and bland. We are sad to say it but after years of coming here I don’t think we will be returning for Sunday lunch.

It's been 40 years since I last visited the Shepherd and Shepherdess but the atmosphere, service and overall experience does not seem to have diminished with the years. The food was outstanding, the portions were huge, the beers was beautiful and the staff were amazing. Love this place, won't leave it as long next time!!

Found this place after visiting Durham for the day and decided to go for some food. We went at midday on Sunday, so it was really busy and we were not expecting to get a table. No tables were free so we chanced asking at the bar, where a lovely lad said he will make sure we get seated and let us order food and drinks in the meantime. We were only waiting 5-10 minutes and were shown to a table. We ordered the minted lamb chop special and a mixed grill and it was the nicest food we’ve had in a while. Dessert did not disappoint either. The prices are so reasonable, especially for the mixed grill at 12.95, as the portion is massive and you pay more than that at chain pubs that give less food at a lower quality! Overall, a cosy traditional pub and we will definitely be driving the 30 minute trip from Sunderland to revisit soon.

We waited 50 minutes for the worst Sunday dinner ever… roasties were hard, mash was lumpy and gravy was like water. The veggies must not of been drained properly as my plate was full of water. The turkey was cold and just no flavour in the dinner at all. Place was dirty, I would advise to save your money and go elsewhere. Will not be returning.

Very disappointed with this pub. We hadn't been for a while & had a really good experience last time. Not this time though. The staff were very welcoming & brought drinks straight to our table. We ordered our meals, the staff member asking me if I wanted garden or mushy peas with my scampi. Beware! This is a crafty upselling trick. No mention of any extra cost. The meals came & I had peas, a few salad leaves, a quarter of tomato & one slice of cucumber on my plate as well as the chips & scampi. I asked for tartare sauce & got a tiny sized bowl with about one teaspoonful of tartare sauce in it, about enough to accompany 4 pieces of scampi. The chips were home made, not from a decent potato & quite hard, spoilt also by the taste of the cheap oil they had been cooked in. Asking for an itemised bill at the end we discovered that an extra £1.50 had been added on for the peas. On the basis of this underhand action alone we will NOT be returning to this establishment & warn other diners to be on their guard.
