This restaurant has superb food and yet manages to steer clear of being stuffy and pretentious.

Lovely atmosphere and service yesterday at Alec’s. Food was enjoyable (Soft shell crab to start and Roast Sirloin for main) although not the best i’ve had there, the beef wasn’t great but overall it was a great afternoon here !

Expensive but well worth the price. The best meal I've had all year.Absolutely fantastic food, service and atmosphere.I had a fillet and tiger prawns, and I haven't had a steak that good in memory. Will come again for the next birthday.

Superb high quality food in a fabulous restaurant setting with exceptional service. The menu offers a range of imaginative and inviting fish courses but enough variety should diners wish to order dishes other than a fish. Whether you are dining as a couple, family or group you can't go wrong choosing Alec's.Parking: Large, free of charge on site secure parking

Excellent food and attentive service. I particularly enjoyed my Beef Wellington and my partners Goat cheese starter was also excellent. Not cheap but worth it on a special occasion.

I’ve been twice and I can’t fault it. Good portions too.

This is what a dining out experience should be like...The atmosphere is one of being pampered a a bit 'up-market'. Anyway greeted us and immediately put us all at ease. - The consummate maitre d'! Waiters are everywhere and bring warm bread without asking.... The starter of Prawn Laska (recommended by Ayjay) was superb - 10/10. Hot and very well flavoured. My main course was Sea Bass - not overcooked - with a lobster and champagne sauce. Disappointing. With eyes closed I would not have known what it was meant to be.... the French beans, however! The best ever. You have to order them as a side dish! 7/10. My partner had the mixed roast dinner. This looked spectacular, but suffered a little from the 'trying to keep the dinner warm' syndrome. The gorgeous looking Yorkshire Pudding was toughish, and the roast potatoes were not at all crispy. The beef looked perfectly cooked, and my partner pronounced the chicken as being perfect. The gravy was a bit generic, though. 7/10.The sweet? Perfect! Pavlova with raspberries and a raspberry coulis. The meringue was absolutely right - a little gooey, not dry and crumbly. 10/10. My creme brulee was as it should be. Not spectacular, but good. 8/10.Meanwhile Ayjay was doing his stuff. Entertaining, keeping a check on everything repairing any errors and generally making our meal a resounding success. I just wish that I'd had him working for me when I was in the restaurant business!Eat at Alec's. You won't be disappointed with the atmosphere even if you notice the shortcomings in the food.

What a wonderful, uplifting experience today at Alec's after we phoned at short notice and asked if they could accommodate 10 of us for lunch (after a very sad family occasion at the crematorium). The waiting staff were very friendly while still being professional and attentive. They provided us with a table big enough to accommodate all 10 of us, which was perfect. The food was amazing and the restaurant accommodated both dairy and gluten intolerances. They couldn't have done more for us. We asked the fantastic waitress, who deserves a special mention but we forgot to get her name, to take a photo and she went to a lot of trouble to take lots. The whole experience lifted us on what was otherwise a difficult day. We'll all be back, thank you.

Geat Sunday lunch venue or for weekday treat

Very nice food. Fresh, subtle flavours and excellent quality set Alec’s apart as one of the very best restaurants in Essex. They serve Sunday roasts and steak for those who don’t fancy fish. I recommend both the lobster dishes, the lobster & crab soup and the halibut with artichoke. Delicious. The crispy squid wasn’t fantastic.
