Dropped by for a quick Saturday lunch. This was my second visit, the first being a midweek business lunch. As soon as we walked in we were greeted warmly by two young waiting staff. A very desirable menu, not too busy but enough on offer to choose from. We both chose from the light bite lunch. Not sure I would describe it as light, in fact it both choices were very filling. Fish pie and roasted root vegetables and chicken goujons, salad and sauté new potato's. We finished by sharing a lovely cheese board. Two coffees and a lovely pint of Crouch Vale. Great service, lovely food in a charming setting. We will be back again soon.

Had not been since before Covid. Had not lost any of its charm and ambiance. From the moment you walk through the door you are made to feel so welcome. No rush and yet the service was spot on. A good choice on the menu and the food was excellent. Already looking to book again

disappointing. a very small choice on the menu. On receiving the bill I queried an item SPLASH POSTMIX £2. It seems that the bottles of Diet Coke that they buy leave the glass 1 inch short so they top it up from a large bottle. I know that things are hard but to charge £2 for 1 inch of Coke is excessive and they can do without my custom in the future

Most pubs and restaurants seem to be shut in this area on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we were relieved to find this open. It was so good we came back the next evening. Friendly staff, good service and excellent cuisine at a very reasonable price.

First time dining here and the food was fabulous. Wow, what a delicious lunch. Loved it. My only criticism would be paying £8.50 for a very small slither of dessert tart. Overall, a great find.

For the best of Essex "pubs" seek no further. An idyllic setting in secluded Messing this hostelry serves an imaginative range of meals, all beautifully presented. What is more, the staff are prepared to cope with all preferences and (what is exceptional) will even accommodate coeliacs and serious allergies. There is decent car parking, a warm welcome, superb service, tables within or without and very reasonable prices. Moreover dogs are welcome. We were delighted with our visit and will come again.

We eat at The Old Crown for special occasions or when we want a really nice evening out. The food has been of a very high standard every visit. The Crown is much more a restaurant than a pub and booking is recommended.

The staff at The Old Crown just get it. Friendly, efficient service, great food and a good balance between being a good food stop and a pub. The only negative point is the car park, it was increased in size but hardly provides any more spaces.

Lovely old pub. 1 negative the menu is very hard to read due to the font style and very small font. Looking around, all the customers were over 55 yrs old and probably struggled to read it. The food was good. The front of house were very polite and hard working. I wouldn't be put off going again as it is a nice pub in a nice village. Not so much a criticism re the menu, just an observation .

My wife and I were guests of dear friends celebrating an 80th birthday. It was a three generational group - of 26 people. Your helpful staff, slick service and outstanding menu helped make the occasion really special. We plan to return for his 90th! Note: As we live near Bath it was a round trip of 350 miles in a day - and well worth it!

Think Pub food….. think an assortment of fried foods accompanied with chips and lashings of Heinz sachets….. Think again! Beautiful menu, very good and its no wonder why this pub prospers whilst other local pubs struggle or close. Very lucky to have this on our door step

Dinner was poor had the chicken uncooked veg and cheap thigh cut first time and last. Constantly trying to quicken us through the meal process
