Lovely little pub on the river. We visited for a Sunday roast - reasonable price for a huge portion and good food. Admittedly, it wasn't the best roast meat I've had (I had beef, husband had lamb - the lamb was definitely nicer!) but would still definitely visit for a roast dinner and to try their ordinary dinner menu.Also dog friendly which is a massive bonus for us!

My local!! Very busy but normally the service is amazing but not today! Table for two 5.30pm arrived early, no food til 6pm, no roast, mine was served without side dishes at 6pm & my partner had to wait for hers for 5 mins, fish was poor, partners garlic bread was over done and just not up to the standards we expect from the tavern, kitchen finishes at 6pm but we had two bikers seated next to us at 6pm in the busy restaurant area not eating just drinking, very disappointed!

Despite living in the village for many decades we had never had lunch in The Railway Tavern. The roast beef was superb and my husband had the meat pie which he thoroughly enjoyed. This was one of the best sunday roasts we have had in a long time, especially the roast potatoes. Portion sizes were very good. We were very well looked after by a lovely young girl Megan who was really friendly and kind. I'm sure we will be back.

Great location sitting outside by the river. Coffee wasn't good. Lady in the bar was welcoming and lovely.

Booked in for lunch at 2:30 as they couldn’t fit us in earlier & really wanted to go here as had been a few times before & wanted to be outside on a hot day. Nice outside table next to the river as requested. Sign in bar informed there was a 40min delay for food. Ordered at 2:45, meal (mains only) arrived at 3:50. Food was good - stuffed peppers, fish & roast all tasty and well prepared. Went in to order puddings, and was directed to a sign saying ‘no food served after 4’. Asked if we could have some puddings as the main had taken so long, but was told that was the rule. Feel there could have been some flexibility here - none of the puddings offered need cooking, just putting on a plate! Lack of vision on staff part totally spoiled our visit - such a shame.

I haven’t eaten here unfortunately but the food looks good!It’s prime location beautiful riverside seatingIt’s by far the nicest pint in kelvdon!!I would recommend everyone all ages to try this wonderful pub !
Found this little gem on the way back from Mersea Island, wonderful setting by the river, so peaceful, we didn't eat but food looked lovely. Staff very friendly, will def be back soon!

Popped in with my husband and child. Sat by the river, fed the Swan and ducks and had a wonderful dinner!. Small play area for children. Very pleasant staff. Nice selection of real ales. Only thing I could fault, was the litter around the play area and broken glass outside seating area had not been cleared up this afternoon and we were there a good 2hrs. Don't let that put you off as I'm sure it's not normally like that.

This was our third visit to the tavern! Always lovely hot food & vey attentive Staff! Good value for money! Plenty of choice on the menu Lovely friendly atmosphere!

Visited on Saturday, 29th July. Six of us had a drink outside by the river before taking our reserved table inside. We had several different dishes from the main menu and the specials board. All were perfectly cooked and very generous portions. None of us had a starter and we barely had room for our desserts, all of which were also excellent. We stayed for over 4 hours, chatting at our table and the whole experience was enhanced by both Megan and Daisy who looked after us attentively but not obtrusively. Both ladies were cheerful, couteous and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return very soon.

We had a really great lunch. Beautifully presented - a generous quantity of very flavoursome and healthy food. Chicken skewers with coconut rice and a very fresh salad for me. Salmon with lime, rice and salad for him. We shared a glorious red velvet cheesecake with ice cream and finished with very good coffee. Megan and Daisy served us and were both very efficient, really helpful and friendly. This was a first visit chosen mainly for the location (which is very attractive as well as convenient) but won't be the last. There are a lot more interesting things to choose from on the menu.
