The menu had changed, so had to compromise. My husband's 'sticky beef rib' starter wasn't cheap and was barely 2 mouthfuls and very badly presented. My soup was good. Reluctant to go again.

Booked a table for my wife and I for Xmas eve. Turned up at allotted time to then be told they’d shut the kitchen because they were too busy!! Utter joke. Ruined our evening as we couldn’t get in elsewhere locally. No apology. Nothing. I sort of understand turning away on the speck customers but not customers who had a pre-booked table. Moved here a couple of weeks ago and was really looking forward to this. Will not be back for the foreseeable.

We stayed here for 2 nights to visit friends. The staff were very efficient and welcoming and in particular Andy & Kate couldn’t do enough for us. Great parking also at the rear of the hotel. Our room was very spacious and modern with lots of attention to detail to ensure that we had everything we needed. I loved the bed, so comfy and linen was of a lovely quality. Our bathroom was also a wow ? and great locally produced complimentary toiletries that smelt great ?. We hadn’t planned to have breakfast at the hotel however on our second day we booked in and were so pleased we did. Great menu, reasonably priced and with a lovely view of the River. I had the smashed avocado on toast and swapped the smoked salmon option for poached egg and it was beautiful. I would recommend to book in advance as the locals clearly knew how good the breakfasts were so it filled up very quickly ?. On the whole we were very impressed with The Crown quality facilities and location and are already planning a return stop over in August 2024. This time we’ll definitely be bringing Martha ? as it was super doggie friendly too.

Had some really good food and drinks. The steak was really tasty and the cod batter was nice and crunchy. Arrived early to picked a table looking across the river.

Had our works Christmas meal here and couldn’t fault it. The food was great, the service just right and the pub looked beautiful with all the Christmas decorations. Really nice evening- thank you

Visited The Crown this afternoon for lunch. Had the Lamb rump with madras gravy, off the specials, delicious. Staff super friendly as always. Will be back.

Went in with 2 friends for breakfast as our usual venue was closed. We all ordered the large breakfast: to say it was poor is giving it a compliment! Everything looked and tasted like it had been in the deep fat fryer and forgotten about….fried bread that broke into small pieces it was that hard, bacon that could have been used as roof slates, cheap sausages so full of fat that they squirted fat over me when I cut into it, mushrooms that were crispy and dry! Oh and they even forgot to add the hash browns to all 3 breakfasts that we didn’t realise until the end and when we challenged the waitress she apologised but still charged us full price! It’s such a shame that this pub takes up such a great spot on the river! Won’t be back again!

What a FAB night we had last night at The Crown. A great community event with the Colchester Brass Band in attendance. Lots of singing and smiling faces. Mulled wine, mince pies and Festive Fun! Thanks to all of the hard working staff. We had a blast!

Made a booking over the phone. Greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our table. Drinks came quickly. I ordered the Bavette steak which was so tasty and my wife had the wild mushroom risotto which she loved. The beer was good and will be back. Great views across the river and a big new terrace outside.

We stayed in the Stour room for 3 nights, communication when booking was good and on arrival we received a warm and friendly welcome. The room is lovely, spotlessly clean and very comfortable with a beautiful bathroom and separate toilet.Breakfasts and dinners were fabulous with some lovely options on the menu. We found all the staff to be both attentive and friendly. The Crown is in a great location on the High Street and overlooking the estuary. After such a memorable stay we are looking forward to staying with you again next year.

Great service and fabfood! The chefs were great on bonfire night. We had burgers and they were so delicious. The lad on the tablet was kind and made us feel welcome.
