Popped in just for a beer.

Really enjoyable pre-concert meal tonight. Sadly no time to have dessert or coffee but my companions enjoyed their pork mains whilst I opted for the Provencale fish soup and the grilled sardines. Both good. Much appreciated too was the care given by our waiter to one person in our party who needed to avoid a list of allergens. It's still my favourite place to eat out in town. Here's to next time ????Dietary restrictions: Thanks to the waiter for his patience in supporting one of our group with dietary restrictions.

Great vibes and really incredible food, best cheesecake I've had in a while. And thanks for serving my favourite aperitifs, an americano ♥️

Expensive @£100/each for Sunday lunch and wine but can't fault the quality of the food!

We left feeling quite disappointed. We paid a lot but the food wasn’t worth it. The atmosphere didn’t match the fancy prices - we expected a more chill pub vibe. The service was okay, but they rushed us to order before the kitchen closed.

My third visit to A&H. The last was my birthday in October and was perfect with efficient but discreet service.Last night a friend was in town unexpectedly so we took the last available table at 20.45. It was irksome to arrive on time and be told all of the meat mains were unavailable and we only had ten minutes to order. I ended up panicking and over ordering starters to make up for the lack of main courses.Food wise it was generally excellent except I strongly detected the presence of Gardini caesar dressing in the Romano courgettes. My main gripe apart from unavailability of food was the slightly surly service from our main waitress, very out of keeping with my previous two visits. I will go back but i would not take such a late booking again. I suggest if you can't serve a main course at 20.45 then you shouldn't take bookings for that time.

What happened to this place? It used to be a reliably good gastropub. Went last week and it was poor: bored, inattentive service (had to ask for several items more than once and were served by about four different waiters over the course of two hours), pretty average food (the chips were school canteen-standard, honestly) and we were served a £50 French red wine in an unlabelled bottle and had to trust that it was what we had ordered (and it didn't taste like a Beaujolais) because the waiter said the pub served some wines "on tap".Good lord, this is quite the drop-off (and especially noticeable given that standards in London food are now so high) since I was coming here 15 years ago. You have to be better than this these days if you're going to be charging £60+ a head for a basic dinner (no starter, no dessert). It's still a lovely, buzzy room to eat in, I will say that.

Overpriced nonsense.

The fish was amazing, autumn apple cocktail delicious, friendly staff and good spot. Oh, and the chestnut ice cream!

Food good, wine expensive, service terrible. Asked to vacate table after waiting forever for service / food. High end prices for pub grub service.

We totally enjoyed the Sunday roast, buttered cabbage and the cheesecake. Great recommendation from staff (sorry forgot to ask for the name but thank you!).

I have been going to the Anchor and Hope for years and IMHO I have never had a bad meal. The staff are welcoming and helpful and the food is always top notch. On this occasion I tried the bisque followed by the steamed halibut with spinach. As I was feeling a bit indulgent I finished with a pear and rhubarb tart with clotted cream. I honestly believe the food quality here is better here than many a more prestigious restaurants and the value for money is really good. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the Waterloo / Southwark area.

We chanced it for a lunch here with our little baby - the anchor and hope made us feel like real adults again! We had grouse lasagna and a big pork chop, simple greens and good bread and butter with a glass of wine. You could tell the food was made with love - delicious, saucy, comforting on a cool autumn day, no pretensions but still elevated and elegant. Our daughter slept long enough for us to eat uninterrupted and she loved meeting the kind chefs too! Thanks so much for a perfect lunch ❤️

First time here and it was absolutely rammed on a Wednesday night. Very loud and crowded. We were unfortunately sat at the worst table in the place. Waiting staff bumping into me everytime they squeezed between the bar and my table to get to other tables. Within ten minutes of sitting down we were asked at least 7 times if we were ready to order. I thought they were trying to turn the tables around (turns out they weren't) so this immediately rubbed me the wrong way. They continue to hover around the whole time. Its quite bizarre and un-nerving and the wrong side of attentive. Also letting in large groups of drunken men to stand at the bar inches from people trying to enjoy a meal just doesn't seem right either. I saw a couple nearby trying to have a romantic meal and there was little chance of that. The superior room next door near the kitchen looked much better though if you are going I'd ask to sit in there as I'm sure that's a much better experience. Food was very tasty although not hugely generous. Grouse lasagne is divine. How about a bit of bread with it or something rather than just a tiny salad? Luckily I was able to steal some of my friends chips.. Wine list is just bizarre with a £30 Beaujolais being sold for £125. Had a decent Cotes du rhone though. I think they need to decide whether they are 100% sitting and dining OR make some more room at the bar and have less tables. As it is its just too busy. Still they must be doing something right for it to be this packed.
