What a hidden (ignored?) gem. Whist my wife ran the Tescos parking gauntlett, I wandered over the bridge into the Old Town. Despite driving around the area on an almost daily basis, I'd forgotten The Chequers existed, and it was on the way to try some other pubs that I spotted it and thought: Why not?And why not indeed? Lovely place. Nice friendly staff with a beautiful spaniel that I guess lives at the pub. Good selection of beers. No football, darts and pool if this is what you are looking for. Just a good solid pub.

11/08/23 the two staff tending the bar were so polite and welcoming. Sometimes, I've felt unwelcome at the chequers, I do really like the pub regardless. But, the bar staff tonight have definitely made me feel more welcome than I did in the past.
