The place looks lovely from the outside in the frosty weather, sadly the reception was just as frosty! We arrived to be told that we could only have light bar food for a very limited menu and that we could only sit in a very small seating area, which was not big enough for our party The drinks were extremely expensive, nearly £20 for a glass of wine and a Guinness. In addition the lighting flickering could have caused an epileptic fit!! My advice would be to not call it a bar and restaurant because it clearly isn’t!

Went for a Red Letter Day Afternoon Tea, with bubbles ?. From the moment we arrived , the lady made us feel very welcome, very attentive and oozed with experience and top rated service. The home baked quiche tart was excellent, lovely crisp pastry, and the sandwich fingers were also if a high quality. As were the home made patisseries. The room was very clean and decorated to a high quality , would definitely go back for another visit , well done, so nice to be served so well .

An excellent lunch for a large group of 19 Red Hat Ladies. The food was hot, tasty and well presented, service was friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to recommend The Chequers for group dining. Thank you for a great experience!

Decided to try this restaurant for a birthday lunch for my daughter and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was inviting and comfortable, the service was excellent - very accommodating, efficient and friendly - and the food was a delight. Five very happy customers! I shall be visiting again.

Despite some other very negative reviews, we were pleased with our afternoon tea experience. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. We were the only guests there and it was really nice to have it to ourselves. The background music was nice and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our afternoon tea was a gift voucher that we’d booked in advance and it included bottomless bubbles. My wife had 3 glasses of fizz and the English Breakfast tea was really nice too..real tea leaves not tea bags. The sandwiches were tasty and fresh and the savoury tarts were really nice too. The scones themselves were ok, but we figured they had been reheated rather than freshly made. The cakes and other pastries were nice enough although we couldn’t finish them all and we took them away in a box. Overall we rated this as a very pleasant experience.

The venue was lovely, staff lovely. Afternoon tea was a real disappointment, we were given vouchers for a present. Bottomless bubbles after noon tea price paid approximately £60 for 2 people. Food was supermarket bought, Mr Kipling cakes, packet scones no freshly made cakes which were shown on the advertisement, bubbles were not bottomless, just one glass. I have never experienced an afternoon tea out as bad as this. Could have opened a packet and stayed at home.

Afternoon tea what a disappointment, Sandwich not bad, savoury, quiche, dry and tasteless cakes and scones, cheap supermarket style definitely not home-made nice building rubbish food

Found 1066 more by luck than judgement. So popped in for lunch and it is really lovely. The three of us all ordered the fish and chips and it was delicious. It’s a beautiful place and Hazel is absolutely lovely. Definitely be returning.

Afternoon tea. Hazel was lovely. Pub setting pretty and perfectly clean, great decor. Afternoon tea was shop bought from a supermarket and put on a cake stand. Never been anywhere where this has happened. Tarlet and sandwiches homemade but supermarket scones and even Mr Kipling French fancies. So disappointed, having been to Norfolk Mead and Assembly rooms recently I have surprised they can call this an afternoon tea. Cost me about £90 in a voucher. Did not want to make a scene as we were the only ones in the restaurant and it was for my Husbands birthday. Honestly quite shocked. This would have come them about £10 in total for four of us. See photo!!

From Hazel’s welcome, to Michael’s menu and the decor, everything was welcoming. The meal was delicious, as was the coffee. An unexpected treat - we shall be back.

Just returned from a Mothers Day lunch here - what a treat. We were a party of 9 and had a wonderful time here - Mother’s day can be one of the most rushed experiences in most restaurants but here we were made to feel very welcome, with attentive service, wonderful freshly cooked food and all in very pleasant surroundings. Will definitely be returning. Thank you!

We had a crisp and sandwich lunch platter pre ordered for 8 adults and 6 kids under 6yrs. The sandwiches that were produced had no thought put in them in regard to the little ones eating them. Far too much mustard in the ham and beef ones for younger palates, and a few adults. The crisps were just a bags of Walkers ‘ready salted’ put on the table and it was all incredibly basic and very disappointing. To top things off we were charged ***£120*** for the pleasure!Having worked in hospitality all over the country and in fact the world, I can’t for the life of me work out how this price was justifiable.
