“I start way too many if my reviews with Wow, but this is a WOWWWW!

I love a good fish and chips, however for most of us we put up with burnt or undercooked chips and limp soggy fish and we just except that as the norm, however restaurant will change all that!

You could just as easily miss this unassuming building on layby near York, however you will kick yourself if you do.

The interior was impeccably clean (for a fish and chips restaurant) and staff were chatty and friendly, even showing me the box sizes so I was better able to choose the size meal I wanted. Food was cooked fresh and served piping hot.

I ordered the mini cod and chips and I would say it was the perfect size for a person for tea. The chips were....drum roll please...cooked to perfection and golden brown and fluffy. The fish was batter just enough to be crispy but not too much to hold too much grease.

I can see why this place has won awards and they deserve them.

“Highwayman Cafe didn't let us down. Four of us came here for a Sunday breakfast after a disppointing experience elsewhere the day before. It was 10ish, busy with cars and people outside, but plenty of seats in and not a long wait. Friendly staff. The food was amazing, with tweaks to the traditional breakfast done to suit our adjustments/dislikes. It finished off our weekend away with friends nicely before we parted ways. We will definitely return in future.”
