I have just returned home from a two night stay at this location, and even as a solo business traveller, I could not recommend this place enough. The staff were very friendly, the food was exceptional, the room was clean and homely, and the atmosphere was wonderful. It gave me warm vibes of being in a classic community pub, and were I not having to have spent so much of the evenings working, I would have loved to have spent more time than I was able to in the bar area.Unfortunately I was unable to spend any time exploring the surroundings, however from what I did see during my trips in and out of the area, I would be very happy spending a long weekend here to explore the area.My only possible negative would be the poor WiFi signal in my room, but were I not travelling on business, I'd see this as a positive.Thank you for such a lovely stay, and I hope to revisit in the future on a personal adventure so I can enjoy the area properly!Rooms: The room I stayed in (The Middleham room) was small and comfortable. It was very clean and quiet.Food & drinks: The food was of fantastic quality at extremely reasonable prices. The special on offer during my stay was a "Mexican lasagne," which I enjoyed so much the first night, I had it again on the second.Noteworthy details: Parking appears to be on a "first come, first served" basis on the cobbled square in front of the hotel. It is free, however, there is an honesty box for the upkeep of the area in the centre.

Great place to stay. Rooms are cozy but comfortable. Bar was very welcoming. Food was fabulous. Friendly staff were the icing on the cake. We’ll be back.

We used to travel to this pub every few months for a great big sandwich. Unfortunately we went there last weekend 15th Sept and the sandwich is not as it used to be. No baguette and just two thin pieces of bread. Really disappointed. Drinks and bar vibes are nice, but they need to address the food

Booked for steak night for two people... when we arrived (on time) they only had one steak left! Annoying. Had a good meal nevertheless and the rhubarb crumble is fantastic.

Lovely quirky hotel in the market square. Clean if small room which is expected in such an old building. Lovely friendly staff and delicious food. Our only niggle was housekeeping. For the price I would have expected the waste bins emptied, tea trays replenishing, and wet towels replaced as they couldn't dry in the room and we stayed for two nights. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay in a lovely area of the country.

Stopped for a sandwich and a drink here after visiting Jervaulx Abbey, as this is the only eatery in Middleham that's open on a Monday. On reflection I wish we'd gone on to Leyburn instead. My pork and apple sandwich had clearly just emerged from a fridge, as the shop-bought bread was as cold as the jarred apple sauce and 2mm-thick layer of butter centre. The pork had a couple of crispy bits, which was nice, but this was outweighed by the massive chunks of fat and sinew, which were considerably less nice. The sandwiches were brought out without cutlery or napkins, and no indication of where these could be found. The bowl of chips we ordered were brought out by a surly middle-aged man in a checked shirt who I assumed was the manager. They were dumped on the table with a sullen "There's yer chips" as Mr Grumpy turned away and walked off without offering salt or ketchup, or indeed checking to see whether we had cutlery. We had to ask for salt and ketchup, and even then, only ketchup was produced. To be fair, the chips were good, but that's about all I can really say. I was about to comment that at least the sandwiches arrived reasonably quickly, but given that they seemed to have come straight from the fridge, perhaps that isn't surprising.Next time there's nothing else open in Middleham, I'll just plough on to Leyburn. I'd strongly advise other potential visitors to do the same - after Mr Grumpy's attitude, you'll have a very different view of the "warm Yorkshire welcome" that apparently exists in guidebooks.

Meal was decent pub food at a fair price. Service a bit slow, but they seemed to be short staffed, but would go again. Loads of horse racing memorabilia.

Check your dinner receipt! We were overcharged as they charged us for someone else’s food bill. When we complained they ignored us and never replied. Charged us £60 for an average £45 meal. We’ll never go again. It’s a bit rough. The staff had no idea what they were doing.
