Went to restaurant onlyFood & drinks: Visited this place many times over the years. Front of house staff are fantastic. However food is very disappointing - must be a different chef?

Expensive ordinary disappointing food from here tonight. Massana curry grey unappealing sludge with zero cauliflower and far too hot. Staff uninterested and unapologetic. Clearly not wanting return trade.

Absolutely brilliant pub! Fantastic service by super friendly team, great drinks, lighting, atmosphere and really tasty food. Loved our evening there.

Easily best pub in the village. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Looks quite tired on the outside, but inside lovely authentic country pub atmosphere. Friendly staff and a nice all round

One of my favourite places. Have the salmon fishcakes. Now they've got Jam Roly Poly, which I think we all agree is the king of desserts!

The Golden Lion is the quintessential cosy gastro-pub. It serves excellent food is the most exquisite environment. I had the short rib — simply wonderful flavors. My wife had the duck —also great. We shared the jam rolly poly dessert. Highly recommended!!

We had a decent lunch at the Golden Lion. They had two vegetarian/vegan main courses on the menu to choose from, which looked better than a lot of pubs in the area.It was busy when we went in, mid-week between Christmas and New year, so worth booking a table in advance.

This venue came highly recommended and there are many reasons we can see why. The menu and specials offer a good range of imaginative dishes. Freshness and taste are obviously high priorities. We chose the mussels and pork cheeks followed by pan fried Dover sole and Salmon fishcake, with creme brulee and chocolate and pistachio tart to follow, and completed the meal with perfectly prepared americanos. This is a cosy atmospheric and well patronised village pub so you might be surprised to find such culinary strength on the menu. The main criticism for us throughout was a strong feeling that chef was too heavy handed with the salt for our tastes - something we have encountered too often in fine dining. For us, it really gets in the way of the pure flavours of the ingredients. We always want those to shine through not least to appreciate their subtlety. Tables are quite close together so it is a shame when you are unfortunate to be right next to a table where the diners are having such a good time the volume of talk and laughter feels intrusive. Bad luck on our part on this our first visit especially as it was at the start of service, but it was a Friday evening. Chef is clearly working at a high level of creativity especially on the starters and mains and the front of house team are attentive and friendly.
