The chips tasted like they'd been cooked in dirty oil and cooked 3 times over, very dark. The fish although a big portion was alright but soggy inside. The person that served me looked like his uniform hadn't been washed in a week and just the place was grubby which does make me wonder what food hygiene is going to be like. I will try somewhere else next time.

Just a small shop but the best fish and chips ive had for a long time. Fish was really fresh. Chips were lovely and it was all hot. Would highly recommend

This chip shop is obviously a local chip shop for local people. As holiday makers we visited and had a zero welcome whereas locals did get a warm welcome. We were not offered any of the specials, everything individually priced. A huge fuss over a pie. The way the man spoke to the girl serving was disgusting. Thank goodness we are not local however if we were we would most definitely not return.

Been going here of and on for 6-7 years. Trust me when I say some of these negative reviews are blatantly untrue/massively overstating a problem. It's fine at worst and they're happy to resolve an issue you may have, people locally need to stop having Michelin level expectations from a fish and chip shop.

I have honestly never tasted or seen any food as bad as this. We ordered takeaway scallops, chips and fish. There was a wait as the scallops were to be cooked while we waited. The food was so full of oil it was seeping onto the plate and the food was then swimming around in it. Everything was over cooked. The only thing we could eat was a few of the chips and the fish (both extremely oily and dry)from inside of the batter, and only then because we were hungry and had nothing else to eat. So disappointed as it’s many years since I had scallops

We was visiting Pickering for the day and visited the fish shop takeaway and the service was bad and make sure your food is cooked properly as I got a large fish and the batter wasn't cooked and I had a bad stomach for a few days !

Chips dry. Oil obviously very old and ruined fish. Asked for mayo and got garlic mayo. Allergic to garlic so bad night. Never again!

This used to be such a lovely takeaway with friendly and professional staff..... ...... not anymore! Made the mistake of 2 portions of chips n 2 breadbuns... 8 Quid. Would have been better if the chips weren't brown and look like they were cooked in dirty oil. The portion size was poor for the price, but the chips have enough eyes to see you in to next month, never mind next week. As they took so long to decimate chips, we could see how grubby the shop was. Ryedale Council would have a field day in there. As for the "owner" waving his frozen fish around after peeling the paper off, he rubbed his nose a few times with the hands holding that small bit of fish... I assume he's buying offcuts, there's no way that would be a sizeable portion. Most of our chips have hit the bin, I don't think the rats will be keen on these.
Called in for a takeaway on the way past, the man behind the counter was rude but probably in his mind he was being funny. The spam fritter was the worst I've ever tasted and they forgot the curry sauce I'd ordered and payed for, on the plus side the chips were OK. I won't be going back again.

Really nice cafe staff were really helpful getting my wheelchair into the building the haddock and chips where lovely would recommend

Visited while on holiday in the area. Very disappointed with the quality of the food. Fish and chips smelt of old cooking oil and not tasty at all. Wish I had read the previous reviews first as would not have gone.

The fish is nothing like the pictures on website , very thin pieces of fish , to which you get two pieces of but still nothing like before . The batter was nice , feel the chips were cooked in dirty oil , brown chips and raw potatoe in middle .
