Unfortunately we chose to book our Christmas Day lunch at The Maldon Grey. The table was booked for 2pm for three of us. We got drinks from the bar which was fine for two of us but no real choice of ales (Rocking Reindeer or Icebreaker), not even bottled ones. Our starters arrived fairly quickly. Two Camembert, one pate. They were ok except the Camembert came with two slices of bread, rather than crusty bread or toast- difficult to put Camembert on flabby bread. And the pate had no bread! Just a bit of plain salad, so we asked for bread. We then waited over an hour for our main course!! When it finally arrived, it was cold. I sent mine back, the others put up with it because they were hungry. My steak was fine, but the turkey was cut thickly and very dry and had a gel of gravy spooned on top! The salmon was ok, but not much flavour. We each had four half circles of carrots, along with some brussels, fake tasting mash, four small roasties, red cabbage, a yorkshire, a pig in blanket and a hard stuffing ball the size of a marble! Not appetising at all! And they had to look for cutlery! The dessert came about 40 mins after the main course, the table wasn't cleared in this time. The Christmas pudding was a half inch thin slice from a catering loaf with custard. The brownies were ok, but not much Bailey's sauce. There was only two staff members at front of house and they just couldn't cope. Goodness knows what the kitchen was like for staff- one, maybe?! The two fellas were shattered. I felt sorry for them, but if they want to repeat Christmas Day meals next year they will have to plan it a lot better- staffing, beer, food quality, service. We won't be returning to find out however...

Food was a long time arriving and then was very unpleasant. Dog allowed to wander around and sat near our table. It was quite sometime before owner came to look for him/her to call him/her away. Will not visit again.

Popped in to this pub on the way home from visiting family in Bury St Edmunds. They were only doing Roast dinners, as this was the first day they had done food, I belive. I had the roast turkey and my husband had the roast beef. The turkey was very moist and not at all dry, which is a danger when ordering this meat out... The beef was lovely and pink with very little fat. Lovely home cooked roast potatoes, nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside! The yokies did seem to be premade sadly, as it would be nice to see a nice big home made one. However we were assured that they would be starting to make their own as the get in to the swing of it. Busy restaurant, could maybe have done with extra staff, but the service we did receive was of a good standard and we will return.

Came to The Maldon Grey for lunch with family, after seeing it has Changed hands. We were very pleasantly surprised with how much cleaner the place is and the much more pleasant atmosphere. The bar staff were very friendly and approachable, having a laugh with us over my lack of apple pay knowledge. We ordered 4 roast turkeys, 2 adults and 2 children's. All were very delicious. Nice fluffy roasties, delicious stuffing and we'll cooked veg. The only thing I'd say is homemade Yorkshire puddings would have made the roast even better. We also had 4 desserts, 2 chocolate fudge cakes and 2 honeycomb Sundaes. We will definitely be returning very soon!

I don't live locally however we were visiting family and understand it has new owners since our last visit. The restaurant itself was quiet amd only 2 people working. Had to wait to be served, was initially ignored by one member of staff who just walked off after a few aqkward minutes. The other started to take our order and walked our midway! The other guy came back and we had to start again. No starters available, ordered Roasts, service was slow and when it was finally delivered the food was getting cold. Frozen supermarket potatoes, rock hard shop bought Yorkies and undercooked parsnips, the beef however was pink and not fatty. Tables were cleared but not cleaned after diners left. This place has so much potential, great location, size and facilities, just not enough staff, and those who are there need to be more intentive and service improved.

We have been here a few times and had great service and food but today it was awful service. I am sorry that the barman had to stop playing pool to serve us I realise it was an inconvenience! When our food eventually arrived I ordered 2 chicken and bacon sandwiches but was served salads. I said we ordered sandwiches but they said they don’t serve them as sandwiches but it says on the menu you do. They then charged us for salads so we ended up with something we didn’t order and paid nearly £6 more for the privilege. Then there was the people playing pool vaping and shouting swear words, a lovely family pub.

Nice enough place inside and outside, but came in and had been sat down for 5-10 minutes catching up with friends and were approached and asked to leave if we weren't going to buy anything just as we were standing to come inside and get drinks. Put us off buying anything at all and left. Very uncomfortable experience. Was a very quiet night too, plenty of spare seats, its hardly like we were holding up any other paying customers.

The staff were awful. Ordered 2 flatbreads, took over an hour. When we finally got them, not only did they look and taste disgusting, they got the ingredients wrong. We asked for our money back and definitely won’t be returning

Absolutely awful meal! Pie was stone cold in the middle. Got told the brocoli was 'frozen s**t', so we asked for peas, came with said brocoli instead. When asked how long the chef had been working there, waitress told us, its not the chef it's his brother cooking and he is in a bad mood cuz his brother ain't come in so he's got to cook. Wasn't offered a refund or atleast a discount, no apology. People sitting near us were experiencing similar. If that wasn't enough, the kids in there swearing was disgraceful!

The food I order is always cooked the way I like it, its never raw or overdone. The servers are all so lovely, and very easy to talk to. The whole place has a nice, friendly atmosphere.Vegetarian options: I personally haven't ordered any, but there are plently on the menu.
