Lovely pub! Had a walk nearby and popped in for a roast. Really tasty and the staff even provided us with a free ‘mini-roast’ for our dog! Great service, will definitely be back

Stayed here last summer.A beautiful place in a beautiful village. Food was great, the hosts were super friendly, the garden dining area was lovely. Hiking routes and lovely hills all around. Perfect place for a weekend getaway in the countryside! Looking forward to returning this summer.

Pub located around 20 minutes drive from Chichester in East Dean. Lots of street parking. Traditional English country pub decor with equally traditionally welcome and friendly service. Breakfast visit with excellent quality traditional English breakfast dishes, all very good including delicious Manx kippers. Definitely returning for lunch and/or dinner on next trip to the area. Highly recommended.

At the end of the second leg of our walk along the South Downs Way, twenty-six miles behind us and down to a half a bottle each of water, we reached our pick-up point and demanded a beer and a bite!Harry welcomed us with old school grandeur and a smile as he poured pints and showed us the menu. The meal and the atmosphere was first class. Our next section of the walk, probably Spring 2024, will end in Amberley, but we'll be tempted to celebrate back at the S & G!Thanks Harry, you're a prince among pub landlords!... Pete & Luke

Stopped for lunch with groups of friends mid way through a day walking. Really great choice, range of beautiful beer, perfect lunch menu and the food was delicious. Special mention the barman too, so welcoming, friendly and good at recommendations for both beer and food.

Arrived early evening no booking. The pub was busy only one barman working he was absolutely fantastic, polite, professional, quick, attentive it was like three people morphed into one he warmed his customers it may take slightly longer to be served emphasised quality was most important and so it proved to be the case without having to wait very long at all. The poor man without having enough on his hands, even ran out to give my wife her bag after she had left it behind. The food was delicious as well, really couldn’t fault what we ate. Nice choice of a couple of game dishes we had and all very reasonably price. If I’m ever back in this neck of the woods I will make sure to pop back. Very impressed keep up the great work and thanks for your hospitality

Sixth visit in seven months so we clearly like this place. However today the service very bad. After starters and main we waited 30 mins for the table to be cleared and dessert coffee orders to be taken as in prior visits. I went to the bar and asked the landlord for service at our table. He said no service at table “this is a pub”. Surprised I politely explained we had just finished our mains in the restaurant and he repeated “no table service you order at the bar”. So maybe this is a change in which case it should be explained. There were four waiting staff, the landlord and a lady manager chatting. Total six staff. Why have staff if it’s self service? And at £8 for dessert it is reasonable to be served. I was really disappointed mainly by the rude abrupt response to a perfectly reasonable request. I booked a late lunch through OpenTable and there were even later slots so timing should not be an issue. I paid the bill immediately and left. I won’t return again.
