This is a great inn in a fantastic location just 10 minutes walk away from Appleby Station and town. It has cosy bars, delicious food and very comfortable rooms.Walkability: Very easy to get to from Appleby Station and town. It's on the Settle - Carlisle line, one of the most scenic in the UK and an easy journey by train from London via Leeds.

Stayed for two nights with our dog Ollie and absolutely loved it. From the pleasant check in staff to the comfortable room we were given. The room was spacious but with low ceilings and that added to its charm. The food was lovely and wholesome, and the decor was stylish. But it was the staff that made it special for us. Every single person was warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Would love to return.

We had a short overnight stay here to break up a long journey back home from the Highlands. The room was quirky and comfortable with everything we needed and we both slept well.Breakfast was fab, I chose veggie and was happy with a tasty plate of food. Me and my husband also dined in the pub in the evening, and had 2 very tasty courses, a double g&t each and we shared a bottle of wine which came in at just under £100 which we found very reasonable. The service was relaxed and friendly and we'd definitely stay there again.

Booked for an evening meal. Delicious food very helpful and friendly staff. Great atmosphere, clean, tidy traditional pub. 1 star off as we had to wait a little too long for our food to be served.

We'd seen the Royal Oak as we'd driven past it several times. We've now been three times this last week! Stunning beer, wonderful food, and brilliant service from very friendly staff. Not much more to say really!

Bedroom was Cold! Asked for heating to be turned on as we were sitting in our coats. Bathroom was Freezing each mornings. Dining room not much better. Heating turned on - for ONE hour, hence radiator going cold when we returned to room. Their Cost Cutting spoiled our stay. Complained several times and nowhere to be seen when we paid bill. £100 per night b&b ie £200 plus dinner charge to sit in the cold Other customer said they had complained on previous visit and told there was a problem with the heating. Yes, they won't turn heating on. We won't be returning. It's also a drive distance into town.Rooms: We were allocated an attic room No.8. Lots of steep stairs and low headroom in places. Nice bathroom but Freezing. Pointless having a towel rail when it's stone cold. Husband missed morning shower as so cold.We had to move to Room 7(smaller room), next door due to cold, one heater in there but cold bathroom. Bathroom doors don't shut, all or nothing as far as lights are concerned ?Next morning moved belongings back to room 8. as they had decided to turn on the electric wall heater (which they could have done in the first place) it took the chill off. On last night we were given a Boost of heat as mentioned above, lasted ONE HOUR ONLY consequently when we returned after dinner the room was cooling down. Dreadful.Nearby activities: A park across the busy road.Otherwise you need to drive to any shops, restaurants.Safety: Faces a main road. Very few car spaces (approx 4) otherwise park on main roadWalkability: Walk to town down a hill. 15-20 minutesFood & drinks: Nice breakfast. Your asked if you want Toast. If yes, you are given ONe slice on the same plate as cooked breakfast .I asked for more toast, after a wait ONE slice was delivered.Dinner ok but nothing special, overpriced I thought .Would have been better returning to excellent Authentic Indian Restaurant in town, great food and not expensive. Open from 5pmNoteworthy details: Take warm clothes for bedroom and dining area.Lady sat across from us sat with her coat on all the time.

Ordered sausage and mash. It was stone cold. Based on the very professional reply I have edited this to a 5⭐. Not many establishments even take the time to acknowledge reviews. Thank

Came in with my partner who is disabled and the young girl behind the bar said she couldn’t serve him as he had already had too much to drink. We had just came out so first drink of the night and because my partner has a disability she thought he was drunk. Clearly the staff need some training.

Staying nearby on route to Scotland, we ate here hungry after a long drive we enjoyed a superb meal at this lovely welcoming gastro inn. Before retirement I spent many years travelling extensively in the Far East and all of Europe, staying in hundreds of hotels and eating in many more restaurants from 2 star to 6 star. But my favourite remains a really good English Inn with great traditional food and relaxed atmosphere. This establishment meets and exceeds my expectations. The food and wine were superb and the very friendly service from the waitresses completed the experience. We noticed they also had some lovely rooms at very reasonable prices and this will be our next stop over in this area.
