This hotel is simply exceptional. Rooms are great - spacious, clean and very comfortable beds. The food is on another level. Michelin star without the price or fuss. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

The most fabulous food, really welcoming and the most amazing building. Scouring TripAdvisor and noticing the Salty Monk as we drove by, my wife and I were impressed by the reviews, plus they’re dog friendly, and we chose to book dinner. Booking online was easy, and it shows care and passion being asked to provide a deposit to secure the booking. As we were in a short holiday break we can’t leave our dogs elsewhere, since they are two big Bernese Mountain dogs, and too be honest they’re family. As we say if they don’t allow, well behaved, dogs we aren’t coming either! We arrived and had received a warm welcome from the proprietor and immediately you notice the stringing building and decor. Part of the property is very old and full of character and has been considerately extended. The dining area was clean and welcoming. We didn’t go with small plates, instead opting to “save ourselves” for what was the most amazing and inviting choice of main courses and deserts. We did however spy that they had a selection of bruschetta in the nibbles selection on the drinks menu and had these to start, which were so good we had another round. I had the fillet steak and Tortellini with a side of broccoli whilst my wife had the plaice. Both dishes looked and tasted amazing and packed with flavour. By desert we were starting to get full so we shared the house speciality being a baked Alaska, which once again was fabulous. We had the most amazing experience, it’s a foodies dream restaurant and we’ll definitely be going back again. We hadn’t realised at first but its also possible to stay at the Salty Monk, where they have 7x differently themed rooms. These rooms all look fabulous, plus they’re a dog friendly establishment, so maybe next time when we’re on our next short break holiday.

An absolute hidden gem with a beautiful garden that is like being in someone’s house. The afternoon tea was outstanding and the hosts were incredibly friendly.Did not stay overnight, so can’t comment on the rooms.Food & drinks: We had the afternoon tea which was outstanding. We have had a few in our time and this is right up there.

Excellent breakfast: great choices, well-cooked and so generous that we didn't need lunch(!). Friendly hosts. Some problems with internet access in the room, owing to local infrastructure rather than the hotel itself - 'welcome to Devon'.... Good location, ideal for exploring Sidmouth or further into Devon.

Ate in the Salty Monk on a Friday evening whilst staying at the hotel. We all decided to go for the 8 Course Taster Menu and we were all very happy that we did. Highlights for me were the Weaver Fish, Monkfish Tails with lentils and the fillet steak. Every course hit the spot with balanced flavours. Good wine list too. All of the staff were very courteous and explained each course as they served and it was great to speak withy the chef afterwards. Thanks for a great night.

What a beautiful picturesque place to have an afternoon tea. Beautifully presented and amazing customer service. Nothing was missed. Lovely friendly service. I couldn’t recommend this place enough. Beautiful gardens and settings. Rooms look lovely too. Tick tick tick. I will definitely be back again and might book a room too. Even beats the Ivy for an afternoon tea.

Went to the salty monk for mother in laws 60th anniversary Wow what a find, I've driven past many times and never realised was a restaurant of such quality. Firstly fantastic service and lovely atmosphere Secondly and most important the food. I could have chosen anything on the menu it all looked fantastic, what I chose was perfect. But the deserts were next level, the honey and yogurt alaska ? Will definitely be returning and hope anyone reading this gives ot a go, you will not be disappointed.

What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! Spent a lovely few hours with a friend enjoying afternoon tea for her special birthday…. and what an amazing afternoon tea!! A lovely warm welcome and such a pretty cosy restaurant. The afternoon tea was quite simply stunning! Everything except the cream (understandably) was homemade, from delicious bread for the sandwiches, the lightest scones and gorgeous jam, the little tartlets, meringues and cakes and the loveliest crème brûlée. Nothing was too much trouble and the host was extremely attentive and welcoming without being intrusive. We will definitely return again as soon as we have room in our tummies! Cannot recommend this gem enough.
