A traditional old pub in the heart of Manchester that claims to have been involved in the Peterloo massacre in 1819, which I can believe, it looks like it was. Nothing glitzy or glam about this place, just one step up from sawdust on the floor. A fabulous pub. Despite being hemmed in by the continuing high rise building that the dreadful council allow to make this once fine city as ugly as possible, this gem retains its character. It was around during the Peterloo Massacre and injured were brought there for treatment. It serves some fine real ales, has an extensive beers garden, comfortable interior and a room with some excellent United photos and memorabilia. Well worth a visit.

Let's get this out of the way first - the fact this place has survived is brilliant. Most of the pubs in town have gone and many of those that have survived are a pale imitation of their former selves... Ah... This was once a coppers pub, let's not forget that. A blokes pub. But it was a pub which used to fill with a rich mix of folk of an evening. It did food during the day (I'd sometimes have my dinner there) and had a tiny beer yard, sorry, garden.
