We were visiting Hereford for the day and fancied a Chinese for lunch, we came across the Golden River and noticed the lunchtime offer of 3 courses for £9 a head which seemed an excellent offer. Not sure why the place was empty other than ourselves, the food was delicious probably the best chicken and sweetcorn soup I have ever tasted and my partner thoroughly enjoyed his chicken noodle soup. For main course I opted for Sweet and Sour chicken and my partner had Prawn Curry, both dishes ( we shared ) were plentiful, hot and delicious. We both had banana fritters to finish, the batter coating was light and crispy and made a perfect ending to a lovely meal. The lady that served us was so nice, bringing us a map of the local area as we were unsure of where to find a shop we were looking for. We thought that the lunch was exceptional value and will definitely visit again when we are next in Hereford.

This evening, I had sweet and sour chicken as well as a large spring roll. To my disappointment it was overly vinegary, cold and the spring roll was greasy. I took the food back and received no apology, just a comment about how sweet and sour is vinegar based. I did receive a full refund so gave 2 stars but would have preferred edible food.

It was the first time I saw such bad sweet saur chicken. and I couldn't eat it, so I returned it and they refunded my money. They even sell the wooden spoons they serve with the meal in exchange for money.

Average food, not the best but I couldnt quite complain. I found quiet atmosphere and feeling of awkwardness. I have to say the service was terrible and very disappointing - no welcoming and felt quite uncomfortable as if the bloke serving wanted to be at home instead. Will never be going again.

Picked up our takeaway last night, the sweet and sour sauce and curry sauce were cold the chicken was only luke warm and not crispy and chips totally inedible. Thus only goes to show the food was not fresh on the day. I did have chicken chop suey which was fine. I had too complain about a month ago as the sauce was like water and bland and the chicken was double cooked and burnt. They did give us a free sweet and sour. But now they have just lost a loyal customer as it is to expensive to throw in the bin. Will not be returning.

We have eaten here before. We noticed that prices have risen not a problem expected, but to remove the sweet from the set meal as well as raise prices isn't acceptable. Also disappointed in the sweet & sour chicken the sauce was that sour it was bordering on being inedible. Won't be going back again.

Really disappointed this evening. Worked late today, worked hard all weekend too and decided a chinese takeaway would be just the treat. I have decided to review this as it is the third time I have not been happy with my dinner from the Golden River, Benefit of the doubt has now expired. On two occasions iv "sucked it up buttercup" but tonight it was simply too awful to ignore. Although they offered to cook me another dish I'm afraid it was so bad it has put me off ordering from here again. To be fair they have given me a refund, altho in reality I'm left out of pocket having had to visit twice as naturally they insist on the food being returned and of course hungry. It's such a shame when you decide to spend your hard earned money in a local food establishment that they can't meet an acceptable and even beyond standard of cookery ?

11pm on a saturday night, the place was empty. we found out why! the food was bland and poor quality. Minimal chicken in the chicken chow mein, curry sauce was very watery. cold rice, very greasy pancake roll. used to be great years ago but its really poor now. wont be going back. to be empty on a saturday night just shows how poor the food really is. also no atmosphere, no background music, blank walls.

Words fail me... I don't know where to begin! I should have realised that a quiet restaurant at lunchtime is a No-Go but needed a quick lunch for my family but i had no idea that this would simply be one of the worst meals i have ever had. Absolutely no atmosphere in the restaurant. Each course got progressively worse. Inedible sweet and sour chicken, raw chow mein noodles, luke warm rice and a banana fritter dripping in oil. Nothing had any flavour or seasoning- so bland and uninspiring ? Never EVER again!
