We went with some friends who had been here before, a very historic building, internally, absolutely perfect with a great bar, lots of real ale, two cold fires, and a great atmosphere, the food choice was fantastic, , without doubt, a first class, Gastropub, and well worth a visitParking: Plenty of parking out frontKid-friendliness: Nice menu and all set up for kidsWheelchair accessibility: Flat access and disabled loo

Most post only when they have a gripe. We had nothing to gripe about. . 4 of us went for lunch on Saturday. Adults had the sirloin steak and it’s was amazing. The kids had a lovely lunch too. Brilliant atmosphere and the food was outstanding. Can’t fault it. We will be coming again soon. Thank you Fence Gate!!

Beautiful well kept restaurant and pub, traditional and modern day styling. Saturday evening meal in Jan, great menu and specials to suit all. Delicious and well presented starters and mains. Heineken Zero on draught is a big winner too. Staff are attentive and go the extra mile. Thank you ⭐️

Went in for drinks on Boxing day evening, lovely pub but bar staff were a bit miserable (probably wanted to go home)

Poor service from managing staff. Inattentive, ignorant and unprofessional. The Fence Gate has been our family go to place for many years. We arrived at 3.30 on New Years Day and were seated quite quickly, however we weren’t given any children’s menus for our youngsters and assumed they would accommodate smaller potions. After 10mins the waiter came to take our order and we asked for smaller portions, we were told NO. We should be ordering from a child’s menu. Anyway we all ordered and then waited for a very long 45 mins until I chased the staff for our order. I was informed that all the dishes there made fresh from scratch and a waiting time of 45-55 mins was normal……..It then miraculously arrived quickly and we were mob handed with staff. Unfortunately 2 of the meals were cold. I informed the manager and he whisked them away to be replaced, we were told this would take 15 mins. Very confusing!!! Our replacement meals did arrive within 15 mins and to my horror the second attempt at Cheese pie was colder than the first. Quite literally an ice cold pastry bottom, but the pastry on the top was burnt like it had been under a grill. I took the plate directly to the manager and he, asked me, ‘How!!!’….and that he’d witnessed a temperature probe going into pie before it was brought to our table. I felt like he thought I had ‘Freeze Ray Gun’ in my pocket and had purposely made it cold. I felt so disappointed. He then said……..I presume you don’t want anything else then!! So I left the Fence Gate still Hungry. I even had to complain to get the cold meals removed from the bill. The Fence Gate is supposed one of the top restaurants in the area, but cold food poor service is just unacceptable.

Attended with friends for dinner Lovely, warm establishment which felt welcoming. Seated quickly Drinks order arrived quickly Menu varied, staff not pushy whilst we chose our meals. Nibbles arrived and extra flat bread supplied on request. All main dinner dishes were delivered hot and all were tasty and plentiful. We never felt rushed but felt the staff were attentive to our needs throughout our visit. We are already planning our return

I wrote a negative review a couple of years ago after a couple of evenings where I felt that the Fence Gate had slipped from it'spreviously great heights. My wife and I live in Fence and gave the Fence Gate another chance about 18 months ago. My apologies for the delayed and updated review- it's fair to say that whatever the issues there were have long gone and we visit 2-3 nights a week nowadays. Theres a great vibe, plenty of friendly smiling faces and a good choice of beers, wines and gins. The food is consistently good, my only small criticism is that more steak and ale pies are needed ;-)

Very disappointed with our visit we arrived a group of seven for evening dinner we were booked in for 18.30 felt rushed from arriving we had barely sat down before the staff were waiting to take our orders we all ordered and the staff we poised around the dining room waiting to clear plates and glasses before some off the party had finished eating the starter. Ordered the mains whilst we were eating a member of staff interrupted us to inform us if we wanted coffees we would have to order now as they were waiting to clean the machine so they could go home...which seemed a little unprofessional. I understand you might close early but at 8pm you shouldn't be making customers feel like they have to throw there food down there throats because you're ready for closing. Either stop serving food from 5pm or let people eat at there on pace without feeling rushed.

3 ladies went for lunch today. The food was less than moderate. And the Hungarian wine was extortionate. The salmon meal and hassleback potatoes was the smallest I have ever seen. Without the carrots which when questioned were thrown on the table without an apology. The prawn an salmon sandwich which used to be great was also so small it was a joke. I did approach the staff who were apoligetic and blamed it on staff shortages. Not acceptable in my opinion. Just find its another place where the food and service is poor. Been going there for years. What is wrong with the industry? We all know prices have gone up but we are paying more but getting a lot less?

Prompt service- portions were very small compared to what you normally get when having lunch here.

We didn't eat. Lovely, lively atmospheric pub. Give it a go!

Amazing roast dinner! I also had the salmon linguine to start which I think could have even passed as a main- great portion size. Super affordable, 2 starters, 2 roast dinners and 2 desserts for £60! Drinks are affordable too, can’t go wrong. Staff are lovely and attentive. The only thing I could pick out was that we were charged for drinks on the bill when we had already paid at the bar. However as soon as we pointed it out it was changed and taken off, not a problem. Been coming here for years and will definitely return!

My partner, Gary and I had dinner here on Sunday evening and we were blown away by tbe exceptional service, ambience, food and stunning decor. We have both stated we found a true jewel and it's a place we will return to on a regular basis. We're even going to book a room and stay over next tome. Thank you
