Visited here with local friends for a special birthday. They were more than accommodating when we dropped off balloons and cake in advance and arranged champagne on the table for our arrival. Place isn’t too big so nice and cosy. All staff friendly and efficient and food was amazing. We all had the tomahawk and it was cooked to perfection ?.

came for NYE brunch - very disappointing - expensive set menu - with limited variety- especially when 2 starters and 1 main were sold out. staff rude and drinking buks fizz.

Very Disappointing!After reading positive reviews we were looking forward to our New Year’s Eve Breakfast, (even though we asked on the phone if it was a normal breakfast, in actual fact it was a fixed brunch for £18.95 a head.)Fair enough.We ordered our hot drinks and they came quickly however our starter (waffle) took 1 hour to arrive! Why? By that time my tea was cold! After the starter we then waited another three quarters of an hour for a very average “full English” !My partners scrambled egg and salmon on toast was poorly presented and more like what you would expect from a cheap cafe, as you can see in the picture, she didn’t eat all of it as the toast was almost black!At No time did anyone come and ask if everything was ok, even at the end, no questions at all!My friend couldn’t eat the salmon and we all agreed it was far too salty! Even the bacon on my breakfast was too salt for some.No one cleared the table at the end or asked if we wanted anything, we had to approach the bar for the bill, we mentioned the poor/slow service and overly salty salmon and burnt toast, they agreed to take off 10% but only by us asking.When we checked the bill we had been charged 5x main brunches! Considering there was only 4 adults and one child that didn’t have brunch, just the starter, did seem to show even more incompetence unless it’s a mistake which coincidentally benefits them? (Cynical I know)The seat at the end of the table kept getting nudged by the waitresses and customers passing by which was annoying also. There is no dedicated baby changing either just a mat if you ask. Toilets are very small.The actual ambiance is ok if not a little cramped.Our main disappointment apart from the food itself was the waiting times, you should never have to wait an hour for a starter! Let alone 45 minutes for your main!We arrive just before 1130 and did not leave until after 2pm!Unfortunately a poor experience and we all agreed we will not return.We have eaten in most of the places in Ashby and unfortunately this venue was underwhelming for the reasons mentioned.

The place is lovely. I’ve been many times however I was disappointed on nye. We had booked via the website and the menu that we had on arrival was different to the one on the website. It wasn’t a breakfast menu it was a brunch that also cost more than I had planned . I won’t fault the food as it was lovely however we should’ve been told about this before we arrived. The girls were lovely and I’m not blaming them but someone decided to change the menu and charge more . Maybe because it was nye!! Others in the restaurant weren’t happy either

What a lovely bar and restaurant. I took my friend for afternoon tea. Food delicious and service was excellent. I will definitely be returning very soon.

We went here on Christmas Eve and were not told we would have to have a set brunch (2pm). we had travelled from Worcester to meet a relative here and we wished we had not bothered. The starter of pate was a cheap shop brought value brand. 2 of us had pached eggs with salmon and all 4 poached eggs were rock hard, the manager showed no interest when we told her. My mother in law only wanted scrambled eggs and they charged us for the whole set menu price of £18.95. The blond haired waitress was pleasant but the brown haired one was so miserable, she obviously did not want to be there and made it obvious. We asked her for some water which she slammed down on the table. Then to top this poor experience, there was a guy vaping in the bar and no one said a word as he was obviously a regular.

Sunday lunch was excellent with a great atmosphere and great value. Cannot fault our first visit and hopefully many more.

I love the monkey tree… always amazing service, food and drinks! I’ve tried the champagne breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea (obviously not on the same day ?) and all have been perfect. Thank you!

Staff too busy to pay any attention, didn’t feel they cared at all. Main course meat for both of us was old and almost off!! Couldn’t wait to leave. Such a shame as it’s local and has the potential of being a good restaurant but doesn’t seem like anyone knows what they’re doing. Last time we came, we thought it might be a bad night for them and thought we’d give them another go but we won’t be back!

I really want to like this place. It has all the foundations for a really good place to eat. Ashby needs a place like this. I have been twice. On both occasions. The service could do with a bit of looking at. Messing about in the bar. But not taking plates and checking everyone is okay. The meals take ages. Far longer then they should do and no apology for the delay. My meal was lovely. But the person who I was with. Just a lot of meat slopped on a plate. Also sat by the door. But the restaurant only had 4 tables occupied. On my first visit. They forgot I paid a deposit. 2nd visit the staff immediately became frosty when I asked politely and away from everyone else. Do you know how much longer it will be ? I have faith in this place. I think it could be amazing. Especially for Xmas. Just needs a bit of tweaking, which we all could do with occasionally. Best of luck for the future. I wouldn’t go again but I know if you take this feedback on board. It will get better. You can do better but got potential.
