We had a good meal. Food was well cooked and served. The menu was limited but okay for our requirements. A good effort was made to cater for gluten free. And they stocked 0° Ghost Ship!

DIABOLICAL FOOD AND STAFF!!What used to be a lovely pub with lovely food and staff is no more! Absolutely shocking place if you not been in afew months I recommend going elsewhere!Upon walking in we was met with a very frosty faced women not the usually friendly welcome we had been used too!I ordered my usual (10oz serloin steak) I ordered it medium well. When the plate come out I was beyond disappointed the meal was half the size it used too be, the steak half the usual size was mostly fat and gristle over cooked and chewy. Chips are no longer home cooked all though they wasnt bad the portion size was a fraction of what it used too be, same the other sides.I held off eating waiting for some one to ask if all was ok as some one usally would other times ive been, to ask to swap the meal for something else.No one came and the women was in and out the back then she had what appeared to be a meeting with some one (i heard her say she was from hieniken) So I was unable to speak with her and was no other staff behind the bar.I had to be somewhere so had no time to go elsewhere to eat and been a dibetic i had to eat something before my appointment, not only that the others I was with didn't want theirs to go cold so they started to eat their meals, so I had to option but to eat the meal. That been said as I started to eat my meal I started to wonder if maybe since the menu had change so dramatically in quality and size, that the price would likely have changed to reflect this.Eventually the women came over (after we had been finished) to clear the tableand reluctantly asked if was OK again not friendly and quite passive aggressive, I expressed that it was not the standard I expected in a kind manner, as I had been many times prior and always enjoyed it.In expressing my disappointment to the women I asked if it was the same price as the old standard of food which to my shock she said it was again rather rudely, and was not only rude but was smirking aswell while telling me i ate the food (barring half the steak that was covered in gristle) which i explained why i had to eat the food, again she was clever and smirking. At this point I made it clear I would not be paying £19 for a steak that was the standard of frozen meal or a chain meal such as flying legends at best. The women was not open to offer any resolution and whats worse, not even a apology was given. Now as a business women myself I would of been so apologetic and done what I good to turn a negative experience into a positive one, after all its the custom of the public that keeps you in business with out them there is no business!! at the very very least a sincere apology should of been given and the offer to pass the feedback on to the relevant persons to try improve service and quality in the future. After refusing to pay at first, i agree the food was eaten depsite been very mediocre not worth the £19 i tried to meet this women half way by saying i would pay £10 for the meal rough price as a chain establishment steak as that's the quality I received in fact for a serlion i have had better rumps with less fat and gristle. Again was met with passive aggressive behaviour no compromise and no apology, the women just walked off!I would absolutely not of paid full price for that meal or even paid at all, I since found out lucky for her my god mother paid my bill with her the bill, again the women offered no apology when my god mother chose to pay the bill.Since found out this place is under new ownership for the last few weeks and it shows and I would be very surprised if they last another few weeks. This women should not work with the public a customer service focused role is not for her at all.I would also suggest reverting back to the old suppliers/chefs and service of food or changing the price to reflect the sub standard food service.Over all was deplorable service food and atmosphereReal shame!! Used to be such a good place.

Give the food a miss, nice pub for a drink. Overall we found the food to be mediocre, over cooked steak pie, undercooked gammon? The lasagne was poor, very bland and smothered in cheese, no rich Italian flavour as you'd expect. There are better places to eat in Haxby. Edit..... just seen the reply to my review. I did not telephone you regarding the issues which were quite specific, so can only presume you're making this up.

Went to the Cottage for some Sunday lunch and was disappointed. There was plenty of food in terms of quantity, but unfortunately the quality wasn’t great. The meat (I had pork) was nice, but the potatoes were average and the Yorkshires were well over done. Mine just tasted charred. Alright meal overall but doesn’t compete with other Sunday roasts in the village and nearby. The Black Horse round the corner has better quality Sunday roasts, with more options, and is a similar price. The dessert menu was difficult to read (due to typos, layout, and poor grammar) and my pudding did not come as described, although was tasty all the same. The pub would benefit from getting the menus professionally done, and perhaps a uniform / staff standard. That being said, all members of staff were welcoming and lovely. The toilets could do with some attention as well. Bins cost a fiver but there was just an empty bucket with “towel bin” written on it (with no hand towels), and a mark on the wall where the hand dryer had come off. I’m sure some TLC and attention to detail would fix most of the small issues I found with my experience today. There was nothing major at all, it was just underwhelming and, to be honest, a bit scruffy. I understand the current owners to be relatively new to the pub, so some oversights are expected, but the standard today wasn’t what we expected at all. We won’t be returning for food any time soon but will have a drink ??

Fantastic night. Live music from a very talented lady singing through the generations. Bar was busy with all ages drinking, socialising and even dancing. Bar was well staffed. Staff working hard to serve customers. Great night. Well done to all.

If you are thinking of heading out to The Cottage for something to eat, do yourself an favour - stay home. I can easily say it is the worst money I have ever spent on food. I would have complained but I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Avoid at all cost.

Well, where to start? We were a group of 25, we had booked for Sunday lunch. It didn't start well, as we queued for about 15 minutes just to enter car reg numbers and get a drink. Very short staffed, but in fact the pub was almost empty. We went through to the function room, where it was bitterly cold, we had to keep our coats on. Apparently the boiler had broken down several days earlier! The two halogen heaters had little effect in such a large area. We had booked for 12.30, and had pre-ordered, but food didn't even start arriving till 1.15, served by two young girls who obviously couldn't cope, we felt sorry for them. Only beef meals arrived - 1 slice of beef, a Yorkshire pudding, and a single roast potato, swimming in a vast sea of gravy. Then plates of veg. Cold plates and lukewarm food. At that point it became quite farcical, as they just kept bringing out more vegetables, while those waiting for lamb had no meal. Then we were told by one of the girls that the manager had been admitted to hospital the previous day. Obviously this was unfortunate, but in those circumstances and with no heating the booking should have been cancelled. One of our number had asked for a gluten free meal. One of the girls came to talk to her and told her that she wouldn't be able to have mashed potato, as it contained milk! Absolutely shocking lack of knowledge as to what gluten free means. The same lady was later told that her meal would be delayed as they had to go out and buy gluten free gravy! In fact she did get a meal, a very unappetising looking thick slice of lamb, some mashed potato and a stuffing ball, no gravy, and no veg, as by then the veg were stone cold. Someone came out of the kitchen at our request to talk to us. We pointed out that it was unlikely that any of the people there, most of whom lived locally, would ever return, but she really couldn't have cared less. The chef came out briefly but didn't engage with anyone. At 1.30, with no sign of any more lamb meals, several of us decided to leave. As I left, the young man behind the bar called rudely after me telling me that I had to pay for my (non existent) meal! I've been a regular customer at the Cottage Inn through several changes of management, and there have been occasional problems in the past, but nothing like this, and not an isolated incident judging by other reviews. It remains to be seen how long the current management last. They seem to have no training and little knowledge of the hospitality business.

I can't understand all these bad reviews as our family had a great time. The welcome from the staff when we arrived and service was nice. The food was great with very big portions and hot. I can say this one of the best Sunday dinners I've had at a public house. Would we come again YES so don't believe all you read as this isn't a fake review. Thanks again and we will be back soon.

We missed last year's New Year's Eve party but heard great things, so we were thrilled to see the same band advertised to play again this year and even better that a buffet was included this time, too! I heard some negative experiences about the new management but thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt. Biggest anti-climax of the year! The band was great, but we all felt sorry for them as they struggled to alleviate everyone's disappointment in the lack of effort and care by the venue itself. Nobody hosting, No welcome, No table clothes, Toilets blocked off, horrible damp smell. An empty table with a stack of paper plates but no food. pieces of scrap paper attached to the bar saying 'cash only', 'no draught beers, no spirits. When asked if there was still going to be food as advertised, the bar staff looked puzzled and didn't know. A friend of ours left to go and grab food elsewhere and come back. The buffet eventually came out at almost 10 pm and was mediocre at best. I saw one of the band returning from the main bar, and due to a soaking wet floor that hadn't been mopped, he slipped and fell flat on his back! Later, the same thing almost happened to an old man returning from the front bar toilet! All guests were dressed as you would expect for a nice NYE party, and the manager, most of his staff and his friends were in tracksuits, drinking out front and playing pool all night without acknowledging any guests. Most expensive NYE ticket locally and for what? It was a very awkward and uncomfortable evening all around.
