We stayed at the Hall whilst visiting Yorkshire for my sister’s (covid-compliant) wedding. David, Liz and their staff could not have made us more welcome. We were the only guests at the time, but we were very well looked after. The family room was big and perfect for us. The massive cooked breakfast was a highlight for us all and the enormous fire in the sitting room welcomed us back to the Hall every night ... even though it was only for us! A stunning place, steeped in history, in beautiful grounds. This is the home of Sir David John Smith-Dodsworth, who greeted us on arrival and treated us like old friends. The house is fascinating, full of oil paintings of portraits of David's ancestors and people connected to the family going back to 1620. David and Liz are welcoming. Trisha is the best housekeeper I have ever met. The house is clean and so comfortable. The history in this delightful home is second to none. The peace is out of this world. The countryside is so beautiful. I feel as comfortable as I would in my own home. I love looking at the pictures of the ancestors and wonder what their lives were like. There is no other place like it. I love every stay I have had Thornton Watlass.
