The Rose & Crown
Chelmsford Rd, Great Waltham, ChelmsfordGreat Sunday roast which we keep going back for. Not tried anything else on the menu but from what I've seen coming out of the kitchen all looks very good. Nice outside seating at the front.

The Stores
Chelmsford Rd, Great Waltham, ChelmsfordReally nice cafe, with a villagey feel to it, and the food is lovely too.
It feels quite pricey for what you get (full English £13), but so does everywhere nowadays and I'd say the quality of the food and meat here is better than most places.
Very nice and I'll definitely be back.
Worth noting its always busy, but that's a good thing.
Their coffee is amongst the best I've had too.

The Leather Bottle
Leather Bottle/The St, ChelmsfordPopped in after our walk around Pleshey and enjoyed a local ale from Bishop Nick. It's a lovely pub with friendly staff and a fairly big beer garden. There is space for several vehicles in the car park, or you can park for free on the main road. Our dog also got a warm welcome and was allowed inside and out. We'd definitely come back!

Galvin Green Man
Main Rd, Howe Street, Great Waltham, ChelmsfordWe went some ago for Sunday lunch.
The quality of the food was excellent, that is,apart from the beef, which came from the see through breed of cow.The portion sizes were very small, the selection of vegetables that came with the roast was also very poor, for example pureed carrots served with carrots? Then of course there is the price.

The Walnut Tree
Broad's Green, ChelmsfordThis is a completely unpretentious village pub which seems to exist in its own little time warp. The interior seems to have barely changed since the pub was built in 1888, apart from the addition of a toilet block and the perspex Covid screen across the bar.
It's quirky, the landlord isn't exactly your traditional ebullient host. But all this seems to create a strange sort of charm.
There are a few tables outside the front of the pub (occupied by cheerful locals when we were there) and more in the peaceful, grassy garden behind.
Although there are beer hand-pumps on the bar the beer is actually gravity-dispensed in the 'cellar' behind the bar. And the beer is clearly cared for properly, the pint of Landlord I had was excellent. The Cask Marque awards are well deserved.
If I lived in the village I would definitely frequent this pub. As it is I will have to settle with knowing it is there if I should be passenger this way again.
Don't come here expecting food. Do come expecting a really good pint.
Also, you'll need cash as that is all that is accepted here. Cash is king!
