Sorrento
13 Station Rd, UpminsterSorrento UpminsterThis was surprisingly our first visit to Sorrento which is a long and well established Italian restaurant in Upminster , Essex. The reviews that we’d seen have been mostly good so we thought it was about time to see for ourselves. We decided to go for an early evening dinner on saturday and due to being fully booked were given a time for the table to be returned which for us was fine. We arrived and was given a friendly welcome before being asked where we’d like to be seated. We chose a table next to the bar which gave us a great view of the restaurant. The rustic feel of the restaurant does remind you of the old days but the nice thing is that you do think you are in a little village in Italy. The staff were very friendly and just like the Italian way are constantly chatting to each other. We started with a drink while we looked at the extensive menu as well as a great selection of dishes on the specials board.Starters - We decided to start with the Grilled Sardines from the specials board and the Polpettine Napoli which were meatballs in a tomato sauce with toasted ciabatta. When the dishes arrived the presentation was very basic but the most important thing was that the food was delicious.Mains - Now on to the main course where my wife chose the Sea Bass all’ Aglio which was sea bass fillets with butter , garlic and tomato. For myself I opted for the Veal T.Bone with butter and sage of the specials board. We also ordered a side of Zucchini Fritte. Now here is where we were a mixture of highs and lows. Let’s start with the highs. The Sea Bass was delicious and my Veal T.Bone was a definite 10/10. Unfortunately the lows were the bland selection of vegetables (cabbage , carrots and broccoli) that seem to come with every meat or fish dish. It really was a shame.Desserts - After a nice little break it was time for desserts and we chose two from the specials. They were the Lemon Delizia a lemon sponge cake filled with a lemon custard and the Pasteria an orange flavoured neopolitan tart. Both desserts were a delight and a nice way to finish. We finished with a coffee to bring to and end a delightful visit to Sorrento. The food was very good and yes does take you back in time a bit. The staff were excellent and their friendliness is hard to beat. So yes if you don’t want modern but want to enjoy good food in a nice friendly atmosphere then yes I would recommend a visit. As I said the only little downside was the vegetables served with the main courses. The average price for 3 Courses is £45 so good value for money.Thank You for a lovely evening and hope to see you again soon.

The Jobber's Rest
St. Marys Ln, UpminsterAmazing as always! Cosy homely vibes, friendly attentive staff, good food, some dishes overpriced considering portion sizes. Their Pistachio soufflé is always a winner for me.Just a heads up, this is also a dog friendly eatery, but you can always ask to be seated elsewhere. They also have an outside dining area, which is gorgeous when the weather gets warmer, but I also believe they've patio heaters and blankets for cooler periods.

Roots
38 Corbets Tey Rd, UpminsterWow what a treat this place is. Visited with friends for a (hungover) brunch, it was busy but we were seated outside in the heated area to wait, and still had our drinks orders taken outside by a lovely member of staff. We ordered food & it arrived much quicker than I was expecting given how busy it was (11:30 on a Sunday). I had the 'fry up' my friend had the vegan version and the other poached eggs on toast. I can honestly say the sausages were the nicest ones I've ever had in my life! I would love to know their provider because they were incredible. Whole plate was lovely, beans seemed Homemade too.Friends meals looked just as good but I would say 1 slice of toast for a £9.50 egg dish seemed a bit stingy... and we were told toast was optional for our fry ups, I didn't realise it meant extra charge, so it meant it cost £15 total! (I think). That would be my own downside to this place, it is a 1 off treat, I know Upminster is expensive but £20 for breakfast is a lot.Staff were lovely, drinks were lovely, decor was lovely, would recommend for a weekend treat, and would love to return to try the evening pizza offerings!Vegetarian options: Vegan fry up, vegan and gluten free pancakes, other options too.

The Thatched House
St. Marys Ln, UpminsterA real local gem, and a rare dog-friendly spot! The food here is so much better than your usual gastropub, with care clearly going into each dish in terms of both flavour and presentation. Prices are also very reasonable. Our family was treated amazingly for mothers day, even the pooch. Big thanks to Louise for making us feel so at home!

The Huntsman And Hounds
Ockendon Road, UpminsterCame here for my mum’s wake. I cannot recommend this venue enough. From booking the venue to our arrival for the wake everything was so smooth and the staff were excellent. One of my party has severe allergies and the staff could not have been more helpful. We were actually advised against using the Huntsmen by our funeral director BUT I’m so glad we didn’t listen to them because the venue they recommended treated me shockingly!Thank you Huntsmen and Hounds for a stress free and wonderful wake for my mum!

Costa Coffee
34 Station Road, UpminsterStaff were friendly, fast and helpful. Sandeep served us and he was a pleasure to deal with. Also they were continuously checking tables to make sure they were cleared and were polite when taking empty glasses away. Definitely would come back here. I only gave four stars rather than five because there’s hardly any vegan options but the service was a five.

Pizza Express
131-133 St Mary's Lane, UpminsterWe had a pizza making party for our son's birthday and wow what a ball we had. Mohamed and his team looked after us very well. The execution of showing the children kitchen cleanliness, how to make a pizza and then the children having their 3 course lunches was just perfect. Parents had travelled from quite far so stayed for the duration but it was a great coffee break for parents to relax whilst the children enjoyed the party. Highly recommend and thank you to Mohamed for making it so special.

53 Corbets Tey Rd, UpminsterThe staff were welcoming and friendly. Lacking in atmosphere. Food was OK, I've been served better quality in other Prezzo sites.Parking: Evening parking is restrictive with local council run carparks closing by 8pm. There is street bay parking if you are luck enough to obtain one as there are alot of other establishments nearby.

The Puddle Cafe & Restaurant
Puddledock Farm, St. Marys Ln, UpminsterMy one real complaint is there isn't any meal vegetarian options. You can have a meat free breakfast, jacket potatoes, cheese sandwiches but no main vegetarian meals and apart from beans on toast/jacket potato no vegan options. For meat eaters it is great value for money and lots of choices.Vegetarian options: Very little choice for vegetarians (like myself) and even worse for vegans.Parking: Its quite a large carpark, have always found a space.Wheelchair accessibility: You can go through the side door with wheelchairs, it is a tight squeeze but doable.

Taproom - Upminster
1b Sunnyside Gardens, UpminsterIs this the future of the British pub? I hope so! It's hard to find such a huge collection of ales and ciders anywhere in the UK. It's quite spacious for a 'micro', with plenty of seating and standing room. Very handy for Hornchurch FC on match days. Excellent!
