This is the third year we have as a family had our Christmas dinner at the Rockies. Everytime it has been first class and this year was no different. From the quality of the food to the professional service with a smile from all the staff, it made everyones day so much more enjoyable. Thanks to all involved and the five star reviews are certainly well deserved

The Shoregate

67 High St, Crail, Anstruther

My wife booked the Shoregate for my birthday and we stayed in the top floor suite for 1 night. This was not our first visit as we'd been the year before stopping in for a pint and some nibbles. My wife obviously kept it in her back pocket to surprise me this year when the rooms finally opened. There's a few important things to note about the Shoregate they are as follows:The DavidsThe managers are David and David. Fortunately they are distinguishable in that one is the dark haired creator of "The Holy and the Passionate"/ The other charming and affable chap with light hair and a New Zealand twang is who I will be referring for the rest of the review.ArrivalWe arrived early and entered the bar where we were greeted by David (NZ twang). He was charming affable and let us know the room was ready early so he could take us up straight away if we liked. Retrospectively I now realise he was proud to be taking us up the room. As well he should have been. The suite is immaculate. All coppers, blue and streamlined class. The roomThere are little hidden treasures everywhere. Two bottles of Darnley's gin and two of perfectly paired tonic from Kingsbarns distillery up the road. A filled bucket of ice. Fridge with chilled milk and bottles of mineral water. All complimentary. Two perfect hazelnut and choicolate macrons on a serving dish that houses two pieces of homemade Scottish table. This is just what greets you. The furniture is all big, comfortable, stylish Scottish shore side pieces in keeping with the locale. The bed is enormous and the mattress firm but exceptionally comfortable for it. All that I was missing all night was my faithful hound who was kennelled...Dog friendlyHe needn't have been! There were dogs in and out of the bar all afternoon. All perfectly well behaved and obviously owned by locals who have made the Shoregate their local. The barA variety of lovingly collated local beer, spirits and softs. Sadly the UK doesn't really have the climate for wine or I'm sure they'd feature too. But the Sicilian red we had with dinner was perfectly paired with the main meal. There is something for everyone and there were bottles of very aged rum and malt whiskey that would appeal to anyone that the incredible list of cocktails didn't.The most popular one is The Holy and the Passionate for good reason. Personally I loved the Basil Gimlet and The First Word. The foodWe shared all the appetisers that could be offered at the bar. The vegetable crisps and sourdough bread was our highlight but there really are no wrong answers in this place - my firmly held belief.Dinner started with the beetroot and crowdie. The meatlovers among us will be drawn by the hamhock croquette that my wife had. But believe me neither is to be missed. We split the chateaubriand (2 person min) and were happily tucking into a generous serving of perfectly cooked beef with seasonal veg for what I wish had gone on forever. In the morning my wife had eggs benny and I had beautiful duck meat with eggs and sourdough soldiers. They were both out of this world.David and his teamDavid (NZ) and his team were incredibly attentive and kind. It's obvious he's proud of the service they deliver. If a Swiss watch could offer comfort and charm to a couple on a romantic weekend break then I'd say the place runs like a Swiss watch. But the fact is a Swiss watch would compare itself to how well the Shoregate is running.

Food delicious. Service very pleasant. Restaurant wasn't particularly busy but that could have been the time of year (January 2024) which affected the overall atmosphere. The music playing would stop for adverts - this really lessened the overall experience and should be reviewed. Duck dish, cheese soufflé and bramble parfait were a highlight. Would return if I was in the local area again.

Anstruther was very busy when we visited and all the cafes were busy. So glad we plumped for Coast Coffee. Lucky enough to get an outside table in the sun. It is a no frills cafe, you go to the counter and give your order, pay and then wait for it to be delivered. The waitress comes out and shouts your order and it is delivered to your table. We had Bacon, Brie and Cranberry panini and it was delicious served with crisps and salad. We also had two decaff americanos and the total bill was under £18. Great value and great food. You had the choice to add on a tip when you ordered but I declined but when we finished our meal I made a point of giving a tip by cash as it was such good value.

From an East Neuk local - its the best chippy. The chips alone are to die for, but I regularly switch up between battered and breaded fish, battered sausage and of course battered pizza, because it's hard to choose just one. The staff already always super friendly, and honestly, can't rate it enough ?

In my opinion, this is the best bakers you'll ever discover! The Tipsy cake is the most luxurious I've ever found, "Sare Heids" are a delight that I've never found anywhere else, and the selection of bread is fantastic. If you are lucky enough to visit, make sure you get some Butteries (it's controversial, but I think They're better than the ones from the North of Scotland!) We visit Anstruther and Cellardyke often, and Barnett's ois normally our first stop.

Stopped sat this chippy whilst in Lundin Links. Fish and chips and a single smoked. Sausage. A fish the size of a whale it took two to get it in the box.Cooked to perfection in delicious crispy batter. and delicious chips. My side salad of the smoke sausage was a delicious accompaniment washed down with a 2021 claret of Diet Coke. Nice friendly man and girl on front of house duties and the sauce sommeliers recommendation of brown sauce to compliment the meal was just divine. Our table for two, namely the front of the VW Beetle overlooking the golf course provided the perfect Vista. you are passing and see this mobile culinary delight, hit the brakes you won’t be disappointed.

On a wee day trip through from Renfrewshire, we tried The Wee Chippy, as my husband is Gluten Free, and they offer a great selection of options for him! He hasn't had a sausage in batter from a chippy in years, as most chippys only offer the haddock as the GF. He was delighted. We got a takeaway, and it was lovely, the chips were yummy. We will definitely be back if we are through the East Neuk again ?Dietary restrictions: Loads of Gluten free options on the menu

Fish and Chips on The Waterfront

14 Shore St, Anstruther

Anstruther, a charming fishing village nestled in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, is renowned for its delightful fish and chip shops. Among these, the Fish and Chips on the Waterfront stands out as a true gem.Locals and visitors alike visit here, drawn by its reputation for serving some of the finest Fish Suppers. The award-winning fish and chips here are a quintessential experience—a crispy, golden batter enveloping succulent fish, accompanied by perfectly cooked chips.Whether you choose to savour your meal by the picturesque harbour or enjoy it outside in their seating area with the salty sea breeze, Fish and Chips on the Waterfront ensures that every bite is a taste of coastal perfection. The batter is made fresh, hence there being a bit of a wait for your freshly cooked fish supper. They do both breaded and battered as well as the most insane onion rings. Adam certainly knows how to work with hot oil and has developed alabaster hands from working here. He instinctively knows when the fish is cooked to perfection. And its such fun to watch the peeley walley fish dripping with their secret batter and onion rings enter the hot oil and then burst forth with a beautiful golden crisp crust. You can almost hear it shouting ‘I’m ready! Eat me now!’As Adam fries the fish and onion rings, so Josh prepares those big fat chunky chips, pulls out a pickled egg and get the mushy peas and tartare sauce ready for our order.Depending on how you like your fish supper, there’s plenty of salt, sauce and sprayed vinegar to go around.Outside the chippie, they have several tables where you can sit to enjoy your supper looking out over the water of gently rocking moored boats and the waves making themselves known as they thunderously crash against the harbour walls on the far side.An epic setting no matter the weather! Some tables have blankets available to help keep you a wee bit warmer on those blustery days! The haddock is fresh from Peterhead and is served up 7 days a week from 11:30am. The batter is light and not greasy and overall well seasoned. The onion rings are superb with a crunch that would make any onion ring aficionado smile! The mushy peas are lush and add that extra layer of heartiness to the whole chip supper. For those seeking the ultimate fish supper, this iconic spot has earned the prestigious title of Scotland’s Best Fish Bar 2023—a testament to their commitment to quality and tradition. So, if you find yourself in Anstruther, don’t miss the chance to indulge in this classic Scottish delight at the Fish and Chips on the Waterfront. For more reviews visit www.tartanspoon.co.uk
