The Flying Club

The White Bldg, Rhoose Rd, Rhoose, Barry

Since new Owners have taken over, we have had a few excellent meals, so when they advertised that they were doing a 3 course Christmas Day dinner to be picked up on Christmas Eve we jumped at this offer at a price of £35 per Person. Christmas Eve came and we arrived to pick up an extremely large box of food (It was for 5 of us). There was a mixture of Starters which included Prawn Cocktail and Pate. The prawns were massive and there was seperate salad included. The Main course (vegetarian options were available) was turkey or beef, massive yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, cabbage, roast parsnips, carrots, potatoes and stuffing. There was a range of desserts which included sticky toffee puddings and cheesecakes, fresh cream and custard included. Extras also included were onion chutney and Christmas Crackers.
The lovely Chef and Owner also took her own time out during the busy Christmas period to cook meals for the Homeless, how absolutely wonderful is that !!
I would highly recommend anyone to have a meal and support the Flying Club. We will most definately be visiting during the year for plenty more meals and look forward to booking another delicious Christmas dinner for 2026.

I usually get takeaways from here. It would be a 5 star if the food quality on the weekends matched that of the weekdays. Quality suffers when they get busy it seems. Don't know if they're rushing or different chefs perhaps. Top blokes though.

Fontygary Inn

Fonmon Rd, Rhoose, Barry

Dog friendly pub, but only in a specific area nestled right at the back of the pub.
Food wise: I had chicken and chorizo kebabs which were very tasty, however the pitta was a bit on the tough side. But overall pretty minor criticism. My partner's meal didn't look quite so appetising. Gammon looked anemic and barely cooked through and peas were boiled until hard and no longer a bright pea green.
The wait staff were absolutely excellent and super duper helpful. I could not find fault with them.
The desserts were both lovely and were thoroughly enjoyed.
There were some young adults that turned up not long before we left, who were being rowdy, attempted to be antagonist toward my partner and I. But as I said we left shortly after they arrived nonetheless. But in this regard it's a shame the doggy area is right next to the pool table, gambling machine and jukebox. Not the best set-up.

I live in the south of Germany and found out about farnhams while researching chip shops online on Google Maps. They were our first stop after landing at the airport and after ordering fish and chips and mushy pea fritter and chips were not disappointed. Maybe a tad more salt and vinegar on the salt and vinegar. Chips would have been tasty but they were still very good. Especially the p fritter was nice because these are sometimes hard to find. Will definitely be back next time we visit Wales!
