Great local bar, nothing too fancy. Warm atmosphere and roaring fire in the winter, brilliant beer garden in the summer. Live music occasionally too I believe. Good drinks prices, bar snacks, one pool table, a dartboard, and always full of locals. Dog friendly as well. A great shout for a drink on the regular, or if you're just passing through.
Tucked away in a back street near the harbour, the Famous Barrel really has the atmosphere of a traditional pub. Low ceilings, a dark interior, a pub garden with picnic tables and a warm welcome all help to reinforce first impressions of a locals pub where visitors are welcomed. The pint I chose was Dartmoor Jail Ale and it came to me as clear as crystal and with a great colour which says a lot for the way the pub keeps its beer. Time warp. This is how pubs used to be and what is sadly lacking from today's endless gastropubs. Friendly staff, atmosphere, fireplace, live music. Love the entrance door which is a giant barrel. If you are new to the area or just passing through I strongly recommend going here.
