Red Lion

High St, Aston, Bampton

If you’re local and haven’t been into The Red Lion yet… you’re missing a bit of a gem.

It’s one of those pubs that just feels right the second you walk in — relaxed, welcoming, no pretence. Proper village pub energy, but done well.

Their roast dinners are exactly what you want from a proper pub roast — generous portions, comforting, and actually satisfying. No tiny plates or overdone “gastro” nonsense… just proper food done properly. The kind you look forward to all week.

The atmosphere ties it all together. It’s got that easy, welcoming vibe where everyone feels comfortable, whether you’re in for a drink or staying for food. Proper community feel, which you don’t get everywhere anymore.

The Horse Shoe

Bridge St, Bampton

My wife and I had called in here on Saturday 16th September to see if we could grab a bite to eat and a drink. Unfortunately at lunchtime they did not do any food but did kindly suggest another local place for us to eat at. After about an hour or so we returned to have a drink in the bar area and relax in what we thought was a superb traditional local pub which just had so much character. One of the locals made us feel very welcome and came over and had a chat with us both for about 10 minutes. He gave us some local history info and mentioned about the village and its links with the tv program Downton Abbey. All in all a very nice visit and if we were ever in the area again we would not hesitate in calling in. Thank you.

Bampton Coffee House

Market Sq, Bampton

Met a friend here today and was pleasantly surprised at the size of it inside, very roomy, my coffee was nice and I love the fact that they bring your drinks over to you, as me and my friend both have MS, this is a small thing that really helps remove the anxiety of will I spill it if I try and carry it to the table, and for me that is reason for a 5 star all day as some places will bring it to you but it’s not nice when you have to ask,
I would 100% recommend and I will most definitely be back.

Ye Olde Swan

I recently visited Ye Olde Swan and was genuinely impressed – it’s one of those places that’s clearly had a lot of care and attention put into it, and it really shows.

The first thing that stood out straight away was how nicely the pub has been updated. It still keeps that traditional, cosy pub feel that you want, but everything has been refreshed and brought up to a really high standard. It feels clean, stylish, and welcoming without losing any of its character. You’ve got that perfect balance of old charm and modern comfort, which makes it a great place to relax whether you’re popping in for a quick drink or settling in for a full meal.

The atmosphere is brilliant as well. It’s warm, inviting, and just has that proper pub vibe where you instantly feel comfortable. It’s the kind of place you could easily spend a whole afternoon or evening in without even realising where the time’s gone. Whether you’re with friends, family, or even just stopping by on your own, it feels easy and enjoyable.

The food is another big highlight. Everything we had was really well cooked, full of flavour, and clearly made with good-quality ingredients. You can tell there’s real effort going into the menu, not just your standard pub food thrown together. It’s hearty, satisfying, and exactly what you want from a place like this – proper portions and great taste. Every dish felt like it had been done properly, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

On top of that, the staff were spot on. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which just adds to the whole experience. You’re not left waiting around, and nothing feels like too much trouble for them. It makes a big difference and ties everything together nicely.

Overall, Ye Olde Swan is a fantastic spot that’s clearly been given a new lease of life. With its beautifully updated interior, great atmosphere, and really good food, it’s somewhere I’d happily recommend to anyone. It’s the kind of place you look forward to going back to – and I definitely will be.
