34 New St, BraintreeMy wife, son, and I were in Essex for a wedding last week, and we traveled all the way from Texas. I have business in London and so we spent a week in the city prior to the wedding and ate at some of our favorite spots.
We traveled to Braintree on the night before the wedding and found The House by Hilly Gant for our first meal in Essex.
We were met by the chef when we walked through the door, and he and the wait staff met us with a smile and a handshake. Despite bringing a seven-year-old to a very nice restaurant, they treated us with absolute kindness and appreciation for our visit.
The food was fantastic, and the service was impeccable. And I can honestly say that after a full week in London, this was our best meal of the trip. We felt so welcomed.
It’s difficult for me to imagine another trip to Braintree all the way from Texas, but I might have to come up with a reason just so I can visit this restaurant again. Thank you so much to everyone for not only a great meal but a wonderful experience.

Sides are great and delivery is always fast and friendly my only gripe is still the lack of cheese on the pizzas, if i can see the base and sauce there is not enough! Food was great, tastes good, looks good. Great for a sunny day.
However, I went with my family, wife and 2 teenage boys. And we had a sandwich a drink and coffee and it cost me £58. OK if you can afford it, but its very expensive. I thought in all honesty it was worth it....But I wouldn't make a habit of eating there.
Because they are so busy, expect to queue for a bit longer than usual, and if you arrive later in the day, expect things will have sold out.
The toilets could do with a clean, the men's toilets weren't particularly pleasant.
If your driving by, definitely stop for a coffee. Its a fantastic little coffee shop.

13A Market Pl, BraintreeWent here today with my partner for the first time. We were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. The staff then gave us perfect amount of time to have a look through the menu's before coming over. The waitress took our order with a big smile and complimented the smell of our washing, making it a really nice vibe and felt at ease to sit there and eat. She was very friendly. The drinks were bought over first, I got the fresh orange juice which was beautiful and could tell how fresh it was and my partner got a mocha which he said was the best he'd had. They bought our food over roughly 10 minutes after ordering so the wait wasn't long. Only downside was I asked for a well done egg and it came runny so I had to send it back to redo and it still came back runny. However, the rest of the food was beautiful and we definitely agreed we would be back. Thank you.

5 Coggeshall Rd, BraintreeWent to Caesars as a recommendation from my brother. We decided to meet up with our families. The service was wonderful and very attentive. The food fresh and very tasty. Potions on the main course was very generous.
A fabulous selection of cocktails too, something more places could do. Recommend the Caesar Sour.
Would recommend and hopefully visit again soon.

13-15 Bank St, BraintreeHad our wedding meal / reception at Mosaic for 24 people. The restaurant is very stylish & the interior is very tastefully done. The staff were very attentive & nothing was too much trouble . The food was plentiful, very tasty, hot & well presented. We all ate together and everyone enjoyed their food & drinks. A special ‘thank you’ to Ebru who made sure everything was perfect for ‘my special day’. She made sure we had everything we needed for the day. Big fan of Il Salice, and alwsys enjoy visiting their restaurant. Glad to say the takeaway was very enjoyable and cooked to the same standard. Desert was a work of art in a takeaway tray, so just dived in.
Can't wait for an end to covid restrictions and to get back into the restaurant.

So far, I've had rock and chips ,and the ribs with barbecue sauce and chips, I highly recommend giving them a try, all the staff are very welcoming and friendly, the food was delicious and freshly cooked, the restaurant is very clean and tidy, from what I could see nothing is to bigger deal for them, 10/10 to all the staff for all the hard work they put in to such a lovely restaurant/ takeaway.

We were welcomed by Sam who promptly took us to our table and explained the menu choices including any allergens and seniors menu . We found the option to be at a great value and made or decisions so much ch easier . Even paying separately wasn't an issue - she was so professional and accommodating nothing was a trouble for her. When the food arrived it looked delicious and tasted that good that we even stayed for desserts. Overall I was really impressed with the service quality and the warm welcome that I will definitely be back with my friends again . Thank you Orange Tree team for making me welcome .

Explained to put the car details in the machine for parking. \n\nWe sat down and a lovely young lady (Hanna) came to ask what drink order we would like. She introduced herself and had such a happy and polite manner. She asked our order and any allergies. \n\nWe went for the Sunday dinner option as we do love a carvery. The meat options were great. We both had all five meats and they were all succulent and really tasty. The vegetables, and sides looked and tasted great. The choice of three roast potatoes was all delicious. \n\nthe friendliness of all the staff was really great and this is the reasons why people return. Our server (Hanna) helpfulness made our experience r wasn’t good. the carvers asked about the big or standard option but I always feel the standard is more than enough. Looking at others around it was busy but the servers really made the job look easy as the speed of getting drinks and check backs to ensure everyone was ok and nil issues with the food. \n\nThe restaurant was very clean and ambiance was welcoming. As always the price for the experience was very reasonable and for a good quality and healthy meal was such value for the money. \n\nI booked through the app with ease. The only thing missing is paying through the app which use to be very good instead of airing for your server. However Hannah was very efficient. We paid the bill and left a little tip which she Truly deserved

I also want to highlight the excellent service. Tarek, who works there, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. He was attentive, friendly, and truly made us feel welcome. It’s rare to come across someone so genuine and professional, and it really elevated the whole dining experience.
I would highly recommend Merchant Spice to anyone looking for great food and outstanding hospitality. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Not only that there chicken fillet burgers are on another level, I had previously lived in London for 18 years and let me just say this, YOU will not find a burger like this there! The burger was so so SO soft like biting into a firm yet soft sandwich! Let me say this, if you say you’ve gotten a better burger in Braintree I know your lying, because there’s always chicken delight, who always assures you getting a satisfactory, fulfilling and delicious meal! There kebabs are just to die for as well! The donner is so flavourful and delightful, and the chicken kebabs are on another level, always soft juicy and made fresh!

We didn't stay too long because we knew they had bookings to honour. The setting is intimate and quite limited, despite being a large looking building from the outside. I'd definitely visit again maybe midweek as the vibe inside was a little odd today. Almost as though we had entered a private function. Cannot fault the staff though, very friendly.

105 The St, Black Notley, BraintreeWe hired the pub for my 30th birthday and I cannot recommend enough if you’re wanting a pub venue to yourself to party - Rob was amazing with offering all kinds of options for us and so accommodating. Billy and Ellie the bar staff on the night were AMAZING, they helped keep the party going and so many of our party commented on how it felt like they were there with us! The venue was lovely, there was 70 of us and it felt full but not crowded and even in October we were able to make use of the terrace area. We could have great grandads sat at one end and the drunk dancers at the other with the DJ/ dance floor. Would definitely use the pub again for any events we have!

As we sat outside at their tables, drinking our cocktails, you could have imagined yourself in any European town for a second. The service was great, their friendly staff are very welcoming and our drinks were fantastic. I want to get back to try their German beers. They are doing a great job.
The continental dream is easily shattered in Braintree. As we sat in the deserted pedestrianised street, the only passers-by were a drunk woman staggering home from one of the marketplace pubs at 6.30pm, and a few kids on bikes with man bags. It was early, so I hope a few more people were out for the evening. Braintree needs bars like this to bring some life into the town centre.

8b Cressing Rd, BraintreeFrom the moment i stepped into this Nepalese gem, i knew i was in for something special. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a gentle unhurried service that makes you feel instantly at home.
But the real magic happened when the food arrived.
The lamb pepper fry was, without exaggeration, one of the best I’ve ever had. The lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly spiced, and rich with deep, roasted flavors. Each bite quite literally fell apart with a gentle nudge of the fork — a true testament to expert slow-cooking and seasoning.
To accompany it, i had Dhall that was just as impressive — comforting, aromatic, and layered with flavour. It wasn’t just a side dish; it was a standout in its own right, with a slow-simmered complexity that could easily hold its own on any vegetarian menu.
This wasn’t just a meal it was an experience of Nepalese food. If I lived in the UK this would be my favourite restaurant!

1 The St, Rayne, BraintreeWe visited the Swan Public House & Restaurant on Sunday 01/09/24 this was our first time visiting. This pub has a friendly cosy vibe. We were shown to the restaurant area but unfortunately left for quite a while to the point we weren't sure if we had to go to the bar to order or if they waited on us at the table, we popped down to the bar and a lovely lady said she would come to us at the table which she did do straight away (they were extremely busy so maybe that's why we had to wait longer than maybe you normally would?). The lady that took our orders was extremely pleasant and polite and very helpful when we were ordering certain dishes ie: roast options and steak dishes. The food was delivered in good time & was presented well, it was absolutely delicious & cooked to perfection, you get served a very good portion of food not like some places that scrimp on portions now days. I would say excellent value for money. We all left the table very satisfied. I have given an overall scoring of 4* purely due to I feel the restaurant could do with a little sprucing up and in the garden area there were tables that hadn't been cleared even though staff were delivery food out to the tables, but unfortanley they never cleared any tables on their return to the bar, this is one of my bug bares you should not be returning empty handed if there are tables to be cleared! it also makes a lovely area look unwelcoming to those seated already and to prepective customers.This score has no reflection of the service and great food that's definitely a 5* from all of us. We will definatly be returning to The Public House & Returaurant in Ryane soon.
Kid-friendliness: there were facilities for the children to play in the beer garden.

When the food arrived it looked delicious and tasted that good that we even stayed for desserts. A fabulous selection of cocktails too, something more places could do. Recommend the Caesar Sour.

As we sat outside at their tables, drinking our cocktails, you could have imagined yourself in any European town for a second. The service was great, their friendly staff are very welcoming and our drinks were fantastic. I want to get back to try their German beers. They are doing a great job.
The continental dream is easily shattered in Braintree. As we sat in the deserted pedestrianised street, the only passers-by were a drunk woman staggering home from one of the marketplace pubs at 6.30pm, and a few kids on bikes with man bags. It was early, so I hope a few more people were out for the evening. Braintree needs bars like this to bring some life into the town centre.

The Green, Finchingfield, BraintreeAbsolutely Lovely Location and 10/10 Roast Dinner, I am always easily Disappointed with Traditional Sunday Roasts whenever we go out, However This place was Bang on with the quality and crispy roasties the beef was amazing and fresh, veg was on point and the Yorkshire pudding and gravy finished a perfect meal, fantastic portions and you leave feeling full!!! Definitely will return and definitely going to have a Sunday roast again soon.

But the real magic happened when the food arrived.
The lamb pepper fry was, without exaggeration, one of the best I’ve ever had. The lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly spiced, and rich with deep, roasted flavors. Each bite quite literally fell apart with a gentle nudge of the fork — a true testament to expert slow-cooking and seasoning.
To accompany it, i had Dhall that was just as impressive — comforting, aromatic, and layered with flavour. It wasn’t just a side dish; it was a standout in its own right, with a slow-simmered complexity that could easily hold its own on any vegetarian menu.
This wasn’t just a meal it was an experience of Nepalese food. If I lived in the UK this would be my favourite restaurant!

1 The St, Rayne, BraintreeWe visited the Swan Public House & Restaurant on Sunday 01/09/24 this was our first time visiting. This pub has a friendly cosy vibe. We were shown to the restaurant area but unfortunately left for quite a while to the point we weren't sure if we had to go to the bar to order or if they waited on us at the table, we popped down to the bar and a lovely lady said she would come to us at the table which she did do straight away (they were extremely busy so maybe that's why we had to wait longer than maybe you normally would?). The lady that took our orders was extremely pleasant and polite and very helpful when we were ordering certain dishes ie: roast options and steak dishes. The food was delivered in good time & was presented well, it was absolutely delicious & cooked to perfection, you get served a very good portion of food not like some places that scrimp on portions now days. I would say excellent value for money. We all left the table very satisfied. I have given an overall scoring of 4* purely due to I feel the restaurant could do with a little sprucing up and in the garden area there were tables that hadn't been cleared even though staff were delivery food out to the tables, but unfortanley they never cleared any tables on their return to the bar, this is one of my bug bares you should not be returning empty handed if there are tables to be cleared! it also makes a lovely area look unwelcoming to those seated already and to prepective customers.This score has no reflection of the service and great food that's definitely a 5* from all of us. We will definatly be returning to The Public House & Returaurant in Ryane soon.
Kid-friendliness: there were facilities for the children to play in the beer garden.
