We’re regulars here, but this Valentine’s evening really stood out. We came with friends and took advantage of the steak deal, two beautifully cooked steaks and a bottle of red for £65, which was fantastic value.

The food was honestly 10/10. The steaks were cooked perfectly, full of flavour, and generously portioned. Crispy chips, proper onion rings and a lovely peppercorn sauce. The special scallops starter was also spot and priced so reasonably.

As always, the team were friendly and welcoming, making it a really lovely evening from start to finish. A brilliant night with great food, great wine, and great company.

I love finding these cosy pubs in small villages in our journeys. We stumbled on this one having visited Fountains Abbey and looking for somewhere to eat. We picked it, as you do these days, based on Google reviews (following the overall score and not concentrating too much on the extremes) and we weren’t disappointed. What a lovely place! The service was fairly prompt - we appreciate that because of the number of people in our party and the fact that food is prepared to order there was a reasonable wait before our food arrived. We didn’t think that was excessive. Great menu, good prices, excellent quality food. The roast beef was best amongst the dishes we ordered. Brilliant ales. We tried the Evil Elf made by Rudgate in York. Strongly recommend you try this if you like fruity refreshing ales. All the dishes we chose were very good. It’s definitely been added to our list of places to visit again. Gave 4 stars as we felt the staff need a little training in customer communication - perhaps due to age they did seem a little awkward conversing with us. Also - the apple crumble needs rethinking - the way it’s served with the custard in a small pot makes eating it a little cumbersome. And go easy on the cinnamon - it was overpowering.
