Nearly stayed the night here but found much better accommodation and price at the Wheatsheaf hotel further up the street. Called in for a drink en route to a restaurant and was charged £12.50 for a large wine. As someone who travels a lot with work and regularly drinks in Newcastle City centre, this is the most expensive glass of wine I have paid (outside of London). Having read previous reviews was apprehensive but our experience was fine. Good service offered drinks & checked we were happy. Food tasty & hot. Only downside was £2 extra for pigs in blankets with a turkey dinner. Come on they are part & parcel !

- although I did take a short walk around the block to see where else I could eat in town. However, I already knew there was a great selection of beers on tap, and the menu looked inviting. I ate dinner in both nights I stayed there; the onion rings with my sausages the second night were the best I've ever tasted, with an almost Japanese batter. Breakfast was also a very good offering, especially the eggs with smoked salmon.
